If Grand Seiko has had a blind spot, at least as far as fans are concerned, it is dive watches. One of Seiko’s most revered categories has been underserved by its top-tier sub-brand for years.

That changes now with the debut of the Ushio 300 Diver. Perfectly sized at 40mm and powered by one of the most advanced automatic watch movements on the planet, it is the Grand Seiko diver we’ve all been waiting for.

Watches and Wonders Geneva: Rolex, Grand Seiko and dozens of other heavy hitters gather in Switzerland every year to release their biggest watches. Catch up on all the new novelties.

The Ushio, which means “tide” in Japanese, is significantly smaller in both width and height than the existing SBGH Hi-Beat collection, the brand’s primary diver for years.

The case measures a fraction over 40mm wide and 13mm high, and is made of the proprietary High-Intensity Titanium, which is 30-percent lighter than steel and maintains a lustrous tone.

Despite its smaller size, it offers 300m of water resistance, which tops its predecessor by 100m.

The chamfered case features a long, sloped crown guard that runs lug-to-lug, protecting the fluted, signed crown.

It is presented on Grand Seiko’s new micro-adjustable High-Intensity Titanium three-link bracelet with an added locking mechanism on the folding clasp. The brand logo slides to unlock the clasp, preventing accidental removal while diving.

A high tide mark

Along with improved specs, the Ushio 300 Diver debuts a new dial for Grand Seiko. The hands are simplified, with the fountain pen hour hand replaced by a new version of the Evolution 9 hour hand, and the arrow minute hand is more pointed.

Only the seconds hand, with the lume dot lollipop counterbalance, remains unchanged.

The hour markers are now all rectangular, which resembles the 62MAS. They are fitted with the same green-emitting Lumibrite as the hands.

A silver dash of minutes/seconds track runs along a sizable reahut, which is color-matched to the dial and bezel.

While there is no date complication, Grand Seiko’s new diver is equipped with the brand’s standard dial power reserve indicator.

The dial plate is decorated with Grand Seiko’s Ushio texture, which resembles waves on the sea and fades from light at the center to darker around the outside rim.

The Ushio 300 Diver debuts with blue and green dial options. Both are equipped with matching ceramic bezel inserts featuring fully graduated 60-minute countdown tracks and lume pips.

An ultra fine diver

As nice as the new size and dial are, where the Ushio 300 Diver really blows away its aquatic predecessors is the movement. Grand Seiko equipped it with the newest generation of its UFA Spring Drive movement.

The Caliber 9RB1 is accurate to within 20 seconds per year and provides a 72-hour power reserve.
