Watches and Wonders 2026 has delivered no shortage of headline-worthy releases from Rolex. There is an exceptional new Daytona that, in many ways, is a modern blend of design traits drawn from iconic past references, as well as a boldly colored Oyster Perpetual that is already generating significant buzz on social media.

But for die-hard sports watch fans capable of looking past the obvious crowd-pleasers, the most compelling release from the Crown this year might be the fully revised Yacht-Master II.

Watches and Wonders Geneva: Rolex, Grand Seiko and dozens of other heavy hitters gather in Switzerland every year to release their biggest watches. Catch up on all the new novelties.

A black sheep no more

The Yacht-Master II has been one of the most divisive Role sports watches for a variety of reasons, ranging from its niche sailing-focused complication and busy dial, to its large proportions, gaudier looks, and premium price. The newly overhauled version addresses at least some of these complaints while maintaining the core elements that set this hyper-focused chronograph apart.

For years, the Yacht-Master line has occupied a peculiar position in the Rolex hierarchy.

In the opinion of certain segments of the Rolex fan base and watch experts, including me, several references in the family are among the most underrated watches in the Crown’s entire catalog.

But the most unique and complicated member of the line – the Yacht Master II, has traditionally been far more divisive for reasons ranging from its niche sailing-focused complication and busy dial, to its large proportions, gaudier looks and premium price.

With the new Yacht-Master II, Rolex has delivered the kind of top-to-bottom overhaul that addresses some of the outgoing references’ biggest shortcomings without losing sight of the model’s most unique characteristics.

Still specialized, but further refined

It’s available in two references: the 126680 in Oystersteel and the 126688 in 18k yellow gold. Both measure 44mm across and 13.90mm thick, maintaining the commanding wrist presence that has always defined this model. But the similarities to the outgoing version largely end at the case dimensions. Nearly everything else has been reworked.

The most immediate visual change is the dial. Gone is the old regatta countdown scale that previously dominated the face. In its place is a clean, matte white lacquer surface with applied hour markers in white or yellow gold, depending on the reference.

The countdown scale has been relocated to a new flange on the outer edge of the dial – a subtle but significant change that gives the watch a much more refined and contemporary look. As aBlogtoWatch keenly observed, the transformation is so thorough that you could argue it deserves to be called the Yacht-Master III.

The bezel has also been completely rethought. The old Ring Command system is gone, replaced by a bidirectional rotating bezel fitted with a blue Cerachrom ceramic insert graduated for 60 minutes.

Under the hood, the new caliber 4162 chronograph movement with countdown function replaces the outgoing 4161 and still qualifies as one of the most complicated calibers Rolex currently produces.

It retains the programmable countdown with mechanical memory and on-the-fly synchronization that made the original so impressive, while adding refinements including a Chronergy escapement, a Parachrom hairspring and Paraflex shock absorbers.

The function is also now programmed and operated entirely through the two winch-shaped pushers on the right side of the case, making the system considerably more intuitive to use.

If you’re lost on what this all means in terms of real-world use cases, you aren’t alone.

This is a watch designed around the unique timing demands of competitive sailing, where races begin with a staggered countdown sequence, and crews need to cross the start line at precisely the right moment.

The lower pusher programs the countdown length — each press adds one minute — and that duration is stored mechanically in the movement. The upper pusher starts the count.

Once running, a dedicated fourth hand tracks the remaining minutes while the central seconds hand sweeps counterclockwise, making the final 30 seconds of the countdown easier to read at a glance.

If the countdown falls out of sync with the race committee’s signals — a common occurrence when start sequences are reset or adjusted on the water — a quick press of the lower pusher snaps the timer to the nearest whole minute, allowing the sailor to re-synchronize without stopping and reprogramming the entire function.

The upper pusher stops the countdown when needed, and the lower pusher resets it.

In other words, this is a purpose-built tool for a very specific problem on the racecourse, powered by an impressive mechanical movement that requires no digital input.

Availability and pricing

The broader Yacht-Master family has quietly built a reputation as the thinking collector’s Rolex line. The Yacht-Master 37 Rolesium earned a devoted following, and when Rolex introduced the Yacht-Master 42 in RLX titanium, the watch media was genuinely astonished.

The new Yacht-Master II fits neatly into that narrative, taking the most mechanically ambitious piece in the range and refining it into something that feels both more purposeful and more polished.

But it’s still very much a true luxury sports watch, with a baseline price well above that of nearly every other sports watch Rolex currently makes.

The ref. 126680 in Oystersteel is priced at $20,300. The ref. 126688 in 18k yellow gold comes in at $57,800.

Given the brand’s current demand dynamics, availability at retail may prove challenging, though the Yacht-Master line has historically been more accessible than models like the Daytona or Submariner.
