In the early ’90s, there was arguably no cooler move a person could make with their wardrobe than “pumping up” their Reebok Pumps.

Introduced at the very tail end of the 1980s, the sneakers featured a rubber basketball on the tongue that, when squeezed, would tighten the shoes’ fit via an air compression system.

Watches and Wonders Geneva: Rolex, Grand Seiko and dozens of other heavy hitters gather in Switzerland every year to release their biggest watches. Catch up on all the new novelties.

The unique kicks became a pop culture sensation when Boston Celtics guard Dee Brown pumped his Pumps on court before his winning dunks at the 1991 NBA Slam Dunk Contest, forever linking the shoes to both performance and, well, vibes.

Still, nothing lasts forever, and by the mid-’90s, Reebok Pumps had been dismissed as a fad and largely faded away. But nostalgia for the Pump has been high in recent years, and with Reebok poised to relaunch the shoe this year, the footwear brand has found an unlikely collaborator to transform the ’90s trend into something even cooler than Dee Brown’s no-look dunk: an H. Moser & Cie. watch.

Pump it up

For the past decade and change, Moser has been considered something of a rebel in the oft-stuffy world of high horology. The brand has a youthful energy and whimsical bent that none of its competitors come close to matching, which allows them to convincingly pull off cool, unexpected collabs such as this.

The “this,” in this case, is the Moser Streamliner Pump. The Streamliner is Moser’s integrated sports watch, a sleek, less-common competitor to luxury mainstays like the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and Patek Philippe Nautilus.

For its collab with Reebok, Moser has crafted a new mechanism that allows the wearer to “pump” the watch — i.e., wind it — using a round pusher on the side of the case at 8:00. It’s an orange anodized aluminum hemisphere branded with the Pump logo, and a single pump provides over an hour of power to the mainspring. What’s more, you can witness the power reserve rise on an orange indicator at 8:00 on the dial.

To match Reebok’s athletic vibe, Moser has crafted what may be its sportiest Streamliner yet. The 40 x 11.4mm case is made of forged quartz fiber in either black or white, an extremely lightweight material featuring an interesting moiré pattern. There’s also a titanium “sarcophagus” inner case that holds the movement and integrated rubber strap, while also securing the watch’s 100m of water resistance.

The dial is classic minimalist Moser and is both sporty and attractive. Finished in polished black lacquer for the black case and polished white lacquer for the white version, it features a discreet Moser logo in clear lacquer under 12:00.

Both dials boast solid ceramic Globolight luminous inserts on the hands, with the black version doubling down on lume with Globolight indices and the white edition going for more contrast with applied anthracite markers.

Inside beats Moser’s in-house Calibre HMC 103, a modified version of the brand’s Cal. HMC 500 with the small seconds and automatic winding removed to make way for the entirely original pump complication. Despite its fun-loving nature, the movement is still finished to an extremely high level, with partially skeletonized bridges, an anthracite coating and “Moser double stripes.”
