Grand Seiko unveiled an impressive collection of novelties at Watches and Wonders 2026, including a sporty new dive watch and an eye-catching platinum dress watch with an intricate pattern engraved across the entire case and dial.

But for my money, the piece that stood out most for pure beauty in a pragmatic, daily-wearing package was the SBGY043 Spring Drive Iwao Blue. It utilizes sleek design language reminiscent of some coveted vintage references from the 1960s and contains an absolutely captivating dial.

The SBGY case is on the smaller side for Grand Seiko, measuring 38.5mm wide and just 10.2mm tall. The gentle curvature of the lugs hugs the wrist, making it feel even smaller in action.

I was immediately drawn to the case’s shape, which is more elliptical than the brand’s notoriously codified case design. It’s reminiscent of the cushion cases produced by Grand Seiko in the 1960s, but only seen in the sparse SBGY series today.

It’s a similar look to an anniversary King Seiko released last year by Seiko, but with more nuance to the case shape, and leveled up with Grand Seiko’s signature Zaratsu polish.

The dial is also a subtle departure from the norm, with narrower, sharper dauphine hands and angled applied indices.

It comes on a nine-link steel bracelet rarely deployed by Grand Seiko. The exceptional flexibility enhances the watch’s everyday wearability.

Rock solid

As great as the case is, the feature that turns heads from across the room is the dial. Its name, Iwao, means “rock” in Japanese, referring to the hand-engraved texture modeled after the natural surface of untouched stone.

As for Blue, it refers to the rich color achieved through katsuiro, a natural indigo dyeing process used in Japan for centuries. During the Edo period, it symbolized good fortune and victory and was used on samurai armor and ornaments.

The combination of the rocky texture and rich indigo color resembles the stone-like clumps created when processing indigo plants into a powder for dying.

A dual-curved sapphire crystal adds intrigue to the dial when viewed at sharp angles.

Double barrel

The Iwao Blue is powered by an underrated version of Grand Seiko’s legendary Spring Drive movement, the Caliber 9R31. It is hand-wound, allowing for a slimmer case, and offers an impressive accuracy of within 15 seconds per month.

The Caliber 9R31 also packs a formidable power reserve of 72 hours, thanks to the Dual Spring Barrel system, which uses two parallel mainsprings.

Personally, though, that’s an irrelevant point because if I owned this watch, I wouldn’t take it off for anywhere near 72 hours.

Availability and pricing

While the Iwao Blue is far from Grand Seiko’s most impressive creation, it presents the brand’s noted architectural and mechanical refinement in a refreshing and endlessly wearable package. The katsuiro indigo dial showcases one of Japan’s most celebrated traditional crafts.

Grand Seiko’s SBGY043 Spring Drive Iwao Blue is available for pre-order now for $9,800 and will arrive in June 2026.
