Costco Is Quietly Selling This Premium Cooler Way Below Retail

The Coleman Steel Belted has been around since 1954 for a reason. At essentially half off, it’s worth a look — with a few notable caveats.

Costco’s “What’s New” section has a habit of producing legitimately interesting finds, and this week is no exception.

Tucked in among the usual rotation of seasonal staples is the Coleman Reunion 54-Quart Steel Belted Cooler — a matte midnight black take on one of the most recognizable cooler designs in the country — and it’s listed at just $125.

That’s roughly half of what the same cooler sells for at REI, where it’s priced at $240, and well below Coleman’s own direct retail of $240.

For anyone who’s been keeping an eye out for a cooler upgrade ahead of summer backyard parties, beach days, or fall tailgates, that pricing is hard to ignore.

That said, this cooler is far from perfect, and there are a few things worth knowing before heading to checkout.

The pros

On paper, the Reunion 54-Quart has a lot going for it. The Steel Belted line has been in Coleman’s catalog since 1954, and the Reunion variant keeps the classic stainless steel construction elements while updating them with a sleek matte black finish that reads more modern than the brand’s traditional red-and-green color options.

The design is genuinely attractive in a way that many rotomolded coolers simply aren’t — it looks at home on a patio or in a tailgate setup without screaming “outdoor adventure”.

Practically speaking, the cooler holds up to 85 cans across its 54-quart interior, which is a solid mid-to-large capacity for group outings. The lid can also support up to 250 pounds as a bench.

A built-in stainless steel bottle opener is integrated into the cooler’s body, and the channel drain system allows no-tilt drainage during cleanup. Coleman claims the cooler keeps ice for up to four days at temperatures up to 90°F.

The caveats

The downsides, however, are real and worth spelling out. At just over 18 pounds empty, this is a heavy cooler before you’ve added a single can.

The steel handles, while durable, can become uncomfortably hot to the touch if the cooler is left in direct sunlight, which leads to the bigger issue.

The matte black colorway is visually distinctive, but dark-colored coolers are not optimized for ice retention. Testing by Outdoor Empire found that black coolers ran about 10°F warmer internally than white coolers in direct sunlight, and melted through their ice roughly two days faster — five days versus seven in extreme sun conditions.

In shade, the difference disappears, but it’s a meaningful tradeoff for anyone who plans to use the cooler outdoors on hot, sunny days.

Beyond the color issue, independent testing by CleverHiker found that the Steel Belted line’s insulation underperforms compared to higher-end options in the same size range, and that the lid latch doesn’t form a fully airtight seal — allowing cold air to escape and potentially causing leaks if the cooler is tipped or jostled.

Reviewers at Outdoor Gear Lab placed the Steel Belted in the “second echelon” of the cooler market, behind performance-first options like the Yeti Tundra and Pelican Elite series.

Still, at half the going rate, the Coleman Reunion is easy to recommend — as long as you go in knowing you’re buying a good-looking, easy-to-use cooler, not necessarily the highest-performing one.
