CoolGeek is a relatively new lifestyle audio brand, based in Colorado, that’s become known for its old-school music players with strikingly unique designs.

Two such examples are its M1, a transparent CD player that hangs on your wall like a picture frame and streams audio via Bluetooth, and the VS-01, a Bluetooth turntable that spins the record vertically.

Now, the company has introduced a new turntable that’s significantly more affordable and has a much more vintage aesthetic. In fact, it looks straight out of the early ’90s.

The CoolGeek TS-01 is a belt-drive turntable with a minimalist design. It’s fully automatic, too, so once you press play, it does all the work for you. No need to worry about dropping the needle yourself.

This makes the TS-01 a prime candidate for those just getting into vinyl, as most audiophiles would prefer a manual turntable (it forces you to pay more attention to the record that’s playing). The other thing that makes the vinyl noobies? Its price.

It costs $299, making it the brand’s most affordable turntable to date and putting it in direct competition with similar entry-level models from Audio-Technica, Sony and Victrola.

Retro vibes, internal glow

The TS-01 definitely has vintage appeal, mostly because of its silver aluminum die-cast platter and wonderfully tactile playback buttons located on its front panel. But it’s very much a model vinyl player.

Most significantly, the TS-01 is a turntable that supports Bluetooth. So it can pair to any wireless speaker or headphones that support Bluetooth and stream vinyl directly to it. This way, you don’t have to deal with as many cables as a traditional hi-fi system.

Of course, the TS-01 does have an integrated phono stage and RCA outputs, and thus can be connected more directly to an amplifier or a set of powered/active speakers.

And if you couldn’t tell from some of the photos, the TS-01 is integrated with RGB lights that are located beneath the platter. You can choose between six lighting presets so that, when the turntable is playing, it appears to glow from within. Pretty cool.

CoolGeek ships the TS-01 with two slip mats: one felt and one transparent yellow/green, the latter of which makes the RGB lighting really pop when playing.

Additionally, it comes with a remote control that allows you to control playback from across the room, as well as turn the RGB light on and off, and toggle between the lighting presets.

Availability and pricing

For the last month, CoolGeek has been running a Kickstarter campaign for the TS-01 turntable … and it’s been wildly successful. At the time of writing, the company has raised over $163,000, more than 12 times its original funding goal of $12,766.

The current Kickstarter campaign is set to run for another week, until May 10th. Shipping to early backers will start in July. Wider retail availability of the turntable is set for late summer.

The retail price of the CoolGeek TS-01 will be $299. It comes in two finishes, black or light gray.
