Denon is a heritage Japanese hi-fi manufacturer that is best known today for its high-quality AV receivers, which can range from several hundred bucks to several thousand (its flagship model, AVR-A1H, costs a $7,200).

Now, the brand is releasing the Denon AVR-S270BT, a new entry-level AV receiver — in fact, it’s the brand’s most affordable current offering — that’s designed for those building out a more extensive home audio system for the first time.

Even more interesting, Denon’s newest AV receiver will be available at Costco. So if you’re a Costco member, you can get a pretty ridiculous discount on this already-affordable home theater component.

Denon’s most affordable AVR

Let’s start with the actual Denon AVR-S270BT.

It’s a 5.1-channel AV receiver, meaning it can drive five different speakers and a subwoofer. So it can be the central hub of a surround sound system featuring a center channel, two front-side speakers, two rear-channel surrounds and a wired subwoofer.

The amplifier inside is capable of delivering 70 watts per channel (into 8 ohms). According to the brand, the AVR-S270BT is “designed to make home theater more accessible without compromising performance.”

The Denon AVR-S270BT connects to your TV via HDMI ARC, just like today’s popular soundbars. It features five HDMI inputs and supports 4K HDMI passthrough with HDR10, Dolby Vision and HLG, making it a good option for your various consoles and media players.

The one caveat is that Denon’s AVR-S270BT does not support Dolby Atmos, which, admittedly, might make it a non-starter for serious home theater enthusiasts.

Additionally, the Denon AVR-S270BT also supports Bluetooth, allowing you to stream audio from your smartphone directly to the system.

Costco now sells AVRs

As previously mentioned, Costco will be selling the Denon AVR-S270BT, which is a significant development.

In recent years, Costco has become increasingly serious about offering great home audio. It currently sells speakers, soundbars and home theater systems from the likes of Sonos, Samsung, Klipsch and KEF. But now the retail giant is adding AVRs to its mix, too.

That’s right, at the time of writing, Costco doesn’t appear to be selling any AVRs, meaning that the Denon AVR-S270BT will be its first.

Not only that, but if you buy from Costco, you can save a hundred bucks. Normally priced at $399, Costco will be selling the Denon AVR-S270BT for just $299, which is a pretty great deal.

Price and availability

There are two ways to buy the Denon AVR-S270BT in the US. You can buy it from Denon’s website, where it is priced at $399. Or you can buy from Costco, where it is priced at $299.

Note: The Denon AVR-S270BT was just announced today, and at the time of writing, it does not yet appear on Costco’s website.
