Samsung Goes Big on Home Hi-Fi With These Affordable Bookshelf Speakers

You can think of them as rivals to Sonos’s Era 100 and Era 300. Plus, they can even replace a soundbar.

It’s been a big week for Samsung’s audio division. The company has introduced four new Dolby Atmos soundbar systems, ranging from $1,000 to $2,000. But Samsung is pretty well known for its soundbars (which pair really well with its TVs).

More interestingly, Samsung also officially released two wireless multi-room speakers, the Music Studio 7 and Music Studio 5. Both are extremely versatile active speakers. And they’re priced to rival Sonos’s Era 100 and Era 300.

Once bookshelf, one circular

Let’s start with the higher-end model.

The Music Studio 7 is a bookshelf-sized active speaker that streams high-resolution audio over Wi-Fi, just like Sonos or other multi-room speakers. And despite it looking like a bookshelf speaker, Samsung actually sells them as standalone speakers. Of course, two can be paired to deliver a more traditional stereo sound.

Each Music Studio 7 is a 3.1.1-channel speaker that features five drivers: left, center, right, and up-firing drivers, as well as a built-in subwoofer. And naturally, because of these up-firing drivers, it’s capable of delivering a more immersive Dolby Atmos sound.

On the flipside, the Music Studio 5 is the smaller, more circular-shaped of the two new speakers. It has a 2.1-channel configuration and features three drivers: two tweeters and a built-in woofer.

Notably, Samsung integrated it with its waveguide technology that, according to the brand, “directs and spreads sound evenly across the room, so you’ll enjoy great audio wherever you place the speaker.”

Both speakers support Spotify Touch, so you can instantly start a playlist by tapping the top of the speakers.

Soundbar replacements?

Both speakers have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth streaming capabilities and, naturally, are integrated with Samsung’s proprietary technologies so they sound good and can be seamlessly integrated into larger multi-room or home theater systems with the brand’s other speakers and soundbars.

Both speakers can be wirelessly synced with Samsung’s TVs and soundbars. This means that they can function as soundbar replacements or work with a soundbar to create a more immersive sound.

Most interestingly, they support the company’s Q-Symphony technology, which lets you pair up to five Samsung sound devices to craft a home theater the way you want. So you can position the speakers wherever you want in the room, and they’ll automatically adjust their sound accordingly.

Both of Samsung’s new Music Studio speakers have a minimalist design that, according to the brand, is “crafted to integrate seamlessly into your home décor, whether placed on a shelf, mantel or anywhere else that fits your style.”

Both speakers only come in one finish: black.
