Today, Yamaha continues to be one of the biggest brands in home audio. It’s best known for a wide array of multi-channel AV receivers, designed for serious home theater enthusiasts, but it’s also a prominent player in home hi-fi components, speakers and home theater packages.

The storied Japanese audio manufacturer has been in the soundbar business for over 20 years, too, having released its first model, the YSP-1, back in 2005. And now, the company has unveiled what it is calling its “most advanced” soundbar yet.

Meet the True X Surround 90A.

19 drivers, 12 up-firing

The Yamaha True X Surround 90A isn’t a standalone soundbar. It’s a complete surround sound package that supports Dolby Atmos, comprised of a soundbar, wireless subwoofer and two wireless surround (or rear-channel) speakers.

Of these components, the soundbar stands out because it’s an absolute beast. It features 19 total drivers, 12 of which are up-firing drivers — six located on each side of the soundbar — specially designed for height channels so that it can deliver an unbelievably immersive Dolby Atmos experience.

For context, Sonos’s newest flagship soundbar, the Arc Ultra, has 14 total drivers, two of which are up-firing.

The surrounds are unique because they can work wired or wirelessly, and can even be used individually as a standalone portable Bluetooth speaker.

Versatile surrounds

Another neat thing about the True X Surround 90A is that its surround speakers, which are designed to be placed behind the listener, can operate either wirelessly or wired — they have built-in rechargeable batteries.

Additionally, these surround speakers have two modes, “surround” or “solo,” the latter of which lets you use each as a portable Bluetooth speaker. This way, when you’re not watching TV, you can pick up one of these speakers, carry it around your house (or take it outside), and listen to music.

They’re multi-purpose speakers.

A world’s first

The True X Surround 90A system features many of the same features that you’d expect from today’s flagship soundbars. It supports streaming over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, features advanced room-tuning tech, and supports many of the latest and greatest immersive sound technologies, including Dolby Atmos and DTS:X.

Interestingly, it also holds the distinction of being the world’s first sound bar to support Auro-3D, a burgeoning immersive technology that, according to Yamaha, “especially beloved by audio enthusiasts for its prowess with up-mixing stereo content to rich, 3D sound fields with remarkable realism.”
