The 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA Is Bigger, Better and No Longer Entry-Level

The new CLA has gotten longer, wider, and sleeker than the previous model.

Mercedes unveiled the new 2020 CLA at CES in Las Vegas. The sloped roofline makes it a four-door coupé in Mercedes terminology, rather than a sedan. The car will go on sale in late 2019. So, what’s new?

There are tweaks to differentiate the CLA from the new A-Class sedan that replaced it as the entry-level model in the U.S. The new CLA has gotten longer, wider, and sleeker than the previous model. Mercedes describes it as having “puristic, seductive design” and claims it is the most “emotional” car in its class.

Mercedes will stick with the base 2.0L I-4 Turbo for the CLA 250 and 250 4Matic. But, their engine receives a 13hp bump to 221hp and 258lb-ft of torque, which provides a significant differential from the 188hp A-Class. The new CLA will be paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Don’t get your hopes up for a manual.

On the tech front, the new CLA has dual 7-inch displays and a center console touchpad. The CLA also has the Mercedes Benz User Experience (MBUX) with “new generation” Voice Control and the MBUX Interior Assistant that responds to gestures. Your CLA is now watching you, listening to you, and learning from you. The CLA also brings in some driver assistance systems from the S-Class and can “drive semi-autonomously in certain situations.”

MSRP for the new CLA is TBA. The last generation CLA 250 started at $33,100.
