One of Porsche’s Most Polarizing Models Just Got a 1,000-HP Performance Overhaul

Porsche tuner Gunther Werks gives a nod to the slantnose with a slippery carbon-clad project called F-26.

With its quintessentially ’80s pop-up headlights and its unforgettable flachbau front end, the 930 Turbo Slantnose is one of the rare cases of Porsche deviating from the norm in the 911’s 60-plus-year history.

At the time of its debut, the model was a niche offering, and it remains polarizing in its popularity even to this day. As such, it’s not often that it gets representation on the aftermarket.

Ever prepared to push the envelope, Gunther Werks’s latest effort honors the slantnose Porsche through its exorbitant carbon fiber construction, 1,000-horsepower air-cooled flat-six and, of course, striking front-end design.

Carbon fiber flachbau

The car is called Project F-26, and it gets its name from both its slippery fighter jet-like shape and its limited production volume (just 26 units).

Moreover, Gunther Werks has looked to the Porsche 935 race car and 930 road car for inspiration. However, there is one key difference: instead of the slantnose’s pop-up headlights, the carbon fiber front end features a set of low-profile fixed units.

Thanks to the extensive use of carbon fiber in the front end, Gunther Werks says that F-26 weighs just 2,700 pounds.

Along with improving airflow and reducing drag, Gunther Werks says its lightweight design allows for impressive weight savings — Project F-26 tips the scales at just 2,700 pounds.

As dramatic as the front-end design is, though, it’s hardly the only visual detail worth highlighting. In addition to a custom metallic paint, each Project F-26 bears a set of rear aggressive side intakes and a squared-off fender with a massive, high-downforce carbon fiber wing.

Between the massive wing, the full-width light bar, and the exposed intercoolers, the rear end is quite the spectacle.

Fire-breathing flat-six

But the real star of the show is the engine.

Co-developed with Rothsport Racing, the air-cooled twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter flat-six produces 1,000 horsepower and 750 lb-ft of torque when mated to a six-speed manual transmission and limited-slip diff.

Pop the hood, however, and you’re greeted by an even more impressive display — a 1,000-horsepower flat-six.

To ensure that the fire-breathing block gets plenty of cold air, Gunther Werks has designed Project 26 with a race-derived flat fan. In practice, it pulls more than double the volume of air of a standard vertical fan.

That’s not all — other upgrades include a carbon fiber airbox, a redesigned turbo intercooler plenum, carbon fiber charge pipes as well as a 935-style exhaust with some external wastegates. Taken together, Gunther Werks says this is what gives the F-26 a distinctive sound.

An exclusive endeavor

As you’d expect of such a limited-production Porsche tribute, the Gunther Werks F-26 comes furnished with some top-shelf interior finishings.

The usual suspects, such as exposed carbon fiber and Alcantara, naturally make an appearance. However, Gunther Werks has also incorporated unique touches, like a wooden shift knob as a tribute to Porsche’s racing heritage.

At this stage, Gunther Werks hasn’t announced pricing. However, if interested, you can reach out to get started on a commission.
