Land Rover’s Most Affordable Model Is About to Reach Its Demise

Get ready to pour one out for the Discovery Sport.

Land Rover’s baby Discovery Sport is about to reach the end of its road. Our colleagues across the pond at AutoCar recently received the scoop, learning about the most affordable Land Rover’s eventual demise.

According to the report, the Discovery Sport is sadly just aging out of its current production lifecycle. But don’t worry, there are new models that are teeing up to fill the compact crossover SUV’s spot.

An end to one of Land Rover’s longest-running models

If you forgot about the Discovery Sport, it’s been with us since 2014 as the successor to the LR2/Freelander. It’s essentially a shrunken-down variant of the midsize Discovery.

Because Land Rover did such a good job with its design and platform, it ended up aging gracefully. In fact, the British automaker plans to keep it in production up through the end of this year.

Discovery Sport production will end in December 2026, in line with normal product lifecycles. As part of this transition there will be a managed sunset of manufacturing ahead of this date for certain markets.

After introducing the Discovery Sport in 2014, Land Rover updated the model with a midcycle refresh in 2019. Since then, it’s remained largely unchanged (aside from minor equipment adjustments and color variations).

Here in America, as in other markets where the Discovery Sport sells, the model has been a major volume seller for Land Rover.

Like other base models, then, the Discovery Sport plays an important role for the brand. That’s both in terms of profitability and accessibility.

So, what’s next?

As for what’s going to happen to the Discovery Sport and its future? Well, it’s a bit uncertain for now. But Land Rover likely won’t sit this compact premium SUV segment out, as it’s one of the industry’s biggest cash cows.

It’s the same segment where the likes of the Porsche Macan, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Audi Q5 and Lexus RX also compete.

So far, we know Land Rover has just reintroduced the Freelander nameplate as a new, affordable, entry-level electric crossover. For now, that’s aimed specifically at the Chinese market.

The Gaydon-based carmaker also has an affordable, baby Defender Sport on the way. However, that will likely take up the role as one of the brand’s more affordable dedicated off-roaders.

The Freelander/LR2 and succeeding Discovery Sport were never dedicated off-roaders themselves. Rather, they served as more urban- and family-focused alternatives for those who don’t typically blaze trails as a hobby.

Availability and pricing

Should you still be interested in landing a Discovery Sport in your driveway before its run comes to an end, Land Rover said production will continue through the end of this year. After that, availability will largely depend on remaining dealership inventory.
