The Ford Mustang and Dodge Charger Are Getting Their Archrival Back

We had a gut feeling the last generation Camaro wasn’t the model’s swan song.

The muscle car wars are apparently heating back up again as a next-gen Chevy Camaro reportedly received a green light. Word comes from General Motors enthusiast site, GM Authority, which heard from “sources close to the matter.”

According to the report, GM and Chevy executives gave a seventh-gen model a go for approval. As such, the Ford Mustang and Dodge Charger will get their archrival back, and the iconic American muscle car trifecta will be complete.

However, rumors also suggest the Camaro might not return in the way you think.

Could the world’s first four-door Camaro be in the works?

Firstly, if you had any doubts, don’t worry. The Camaro is retaining its rear-wheel-drive architecture. GM Authority reports the new model will ride on the same next-gen rear-wheel Alpha 2 platform.

That’s the same platform destined to underpin some future gas-powered Cadillac models. This doesn’t sound all too odd as the previous sixth-gen Camaro also used a previous iteration of the Alpha platform.

What is potentially going to change, however, is the Camaro’s body style. According to the some other rumors, the Chevy’s team is considering morphing the next-gen Camaro into a sedan.

This would likely be in response to Dodge offering both a sedan and a coupe version of its Charger. Ford has also been rumored to be working on a Mustang sedan as well.

It was only a few months ago when rumors began popping up about a potential successor to the sixth-gen Camaro. However, they were only rumors.

Now, the latest development can put Camaro and pony car fans to rest about Chevrolet sitting out one of its biggest and historically significant rivalries.

The initial rumor came from GM’s confirmation regarding the emergence of the Alpha 2 platform. Which, is the company’s next-gen rear-wheel-drive modular architecture.

But we’re also relieved to hear the Camaro is making a comeback. The pony car wars wouldn’t be complete without Chevy’s participation. Especially since its crosstown competitor, Ford, still has the Mustang. Meanwhile, Dodge just gave us a new Charger.
