Nissan’s Tiny Affordable Camper Brings the Budget Fix Van Life Needs

This compact modular camper option delivers tons of utility at a price point that’s bound to be tempting outside of its home market.

From lavish Sprinters to terrain-conquering truck conversions, America’s overlanding segment is as vast as it is varied.

Unfortunately, the reality is that most of these rigs require a second mortgage to account for their exorbitant price tags. They invite incredible access to adventure, but they’re not really what you’d call widely attainable.

It’s for this reason that Nissan’s Japanese-market Clipper is so tempting. While it’s an undeniably niche vehicle being a kei van, it’s nevertheless the kind of option that we could use here in the States.

Nissan’s clever Clipper sleeper

Specifically, the Multi-Rack version. Nissan originally introduced the option for the kei van in 2025, and it just brought it back as part of the upcoming model-year refresh.

While the updates themselves are relatively minor (inner and outer visual tweaks and added ADAS features), the Multi-Rack itself is worth appreciating. It’s a simple but undeniably slick setup.

As part of the configuration, Nissan fits the rear of the Clipper van with an interior steel frame and some perforated pegboards. In combination with some clever mounting brackets and general-purpose hooks, it’s a system that allows for truly flexible gear storage.

What’s more, the Multi-Rack is compatible with an optional bed mat that provides sleeping accommodations. It brings four levels of height adjustment, and it comes upholstered in a durable Cordura fabric.

Of course, at 46 inches across and just over 70 inches across, it’ll sleep one, maybe two max. Still, at the equivalent of a little over $14,000 for the base and some $16,500 for the top-grade GX Turbo, those are conditions I’d bet most would find a way to make work.

A case for stateside application

Towards that end, while this kind of tiny camper might seem ill-fitted for markets outside of Japan, it could definitely find a following in the United States.

Sure, being a kei van, its most potent engine option tops out at 63 horsepower. Even ignoring its easy-to-miss size, that’s enough to make it a nuisance on larger roads or in faster traffic.

However, in quieter areas and low-speed city centers, the Clipper could be a hugely popular option for young people and urbanites. Whether hauling gear around town or heading out for a weekend excursion, it promises tons of versatility.

It also wouldn’t be the first kei car to make the jump across the Pacific. Exotic enthusiast vehicles like the Autozam AZ-1 and Honda Beat have long commanded import fanbases, but the appreciation now extends to trucks. With 25-year eligibility, pint-sized pickups such as the Acty and the Carry are both exploding in popularity.

In any case, much as the American market has favored massive engines and sprawling wheelbases, the price of gas will only continue to shift consumer sentiment. With fill-ups costing as much as they do, I know I can’t be the only one dreaming of a tiny fuel-efficient camper like the Clipper.

Availability and pricing

According to Nissan’s announcement, pricing for the Clipper Multi-Rack will start at the equivalent of $14,000 for GX models equipped with two-wheel drive and the naturally aspirated R06A engine. Those with the Turbo and part-time 4WD will start at what works out to roughly $16,500.
