Porsche’s Stunning New Green GT3 Pays Tribute to the Father of the 911

They should’ve called it the “Butzi.”

It’s no mystery that Porsche wouldn’t be where it is today without the 911. And the 911 wouldn’t have happened without the grandson of Ferdinand Porsche, Ferdinand Alexander Porsche.

To highlight this fact, the Zuffenhausen-based automaker just revealed a gorgeous and extremely exclusive, limited edition 911 GT3, called the 90 F.A.

Designed to commemorate Ferdinand Alexander, the 911 GT3 90 F. A. is the byproduct of the brand’s Sonderwunsch division. And it’s much more than the sum of its parts.

Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, whose nickname was “Butzi,” is the son of Ferry Porsche and the grandson of Porsche’s founder, Ferdinand Porsche. Yes, that’s a lot of Ferdinand Porsches to trace in one family tree.

But besides sharing the same name of his forefathers, Ferdinand Alexander is best known for being solely responsible for the 911’s unmistakable shape. Born on December 11, 1935, F.A. started his work at the German automaker near the beginning of its postwar era.

F.A. “Butzi” Porsche was the son of Ferry Porsche and the grandson of the automaker’s founder, Ferdinand Porsche.

Following his studies in industrial design and graduation from the Ulm School of Design, he joined his family’s company in 1957. A couple of years later, in 1959, Butzi initially sketched the 911’s shape.

After laying the groundwork with his initial sketches, further input came from his father and the company’s head of design, Erwin Komenda. After a few revisions, the first 911 prototype, the Typ 901, came to life.

Although F.A. Porsche sketched its overall shape, it still went through a few revisions before resulting in the Typ 901.

Ferdinand Alexander is also credited for penning the iconic motorsports homologation, the 904 Carrera GTS mid-engine sports coupe. He often referred to the 904 as his favorite design.

And in 1972, F.A. also founded Porsche Design, the studio responsible for creating nearly all of the company’s branded accessories.

Had Ferdinand Alexander still been alive today, he would’ve been 90 years old. He passed away in 2012 at the age of 76.

More than just a car

Because this special occasion calls for a very special car, Porsche and its Sonderwunsch divsion pulled out all the stops. The 911 GT3 90 F. A. obviously starts life as a GT3.

But the company removes its iconic rear wing spoiler and instead, employs a load of commemorative details.

Such highlights include a bespoke Oak Green Metallic on Truffle Brown Club Leather combination, special grid-patterned cloth seat inserts and the 911 GT3’s Touring Package as standard.

That Oak Green Metallic hue was inspired by the color of Butzi’s own 911. And those grid-weaved inserts replicate the pattern from his favorite sport coat.
