Despite being one of the most accessibly-priced watches you can buy, the Seiko 5 has an aura of mystique to it. The 5 has been made in an uncountable number of designs over the years, and there’s a lack of information as to why they look the way they do. Take these four iterations of the SNKK “Speed Racer” — the SNKK25J1, SNKK27J, SNKK29J1, and SNKK31J1 — available for sale on Massdrop. The watch gets its nickname from the colorful minute track that extends from 12 o’clock to four o’clock. It’s there primarily for aesthetic reasons, although if you’re the kind of guy who likes to spend the first twenty minutes of every hour doing, well, something specific, then it’s a handy feature to include.
All four SNKK models come packing the venerable 7S26 automatic movement, housed in 38mm cases and mounted on stainless steel bracelets. Each of the four dial colors on offer will set you back just $90. Massdrop says that’s a $130 drop from the watch’s $220 MSRP, though the reality is that these models will regularly sell for around $100 at places like Jomashop. Still, that’s a fantastic price for a well-made mechanical watch with an irrefutably bold personality.
A note on Massdrop:
Massdrop is not like other online retailers. It’s a members-only site that requires signing up (all it takes is an email address). If you’re not a member, you can sign up here. When you place an order from Massdrop at a discounted price, you’re not buying from them directly. The site works by taking orders from consumers, then bulk ordering product at a discount directly from brands and other wholesalers. For more information on how Massdrop works, click here.
