The GMT complication is one of the most useful around — developed by Rolex in the early 1950s for use in their GMT Master, the complication uses a fourth hand in conjunction with a 24-hour bezel to give the wearer access to a second time zone. While there are several different methods for telling the time in a second time zone, Rolex’s method is widely lauded as one of the best.
The only problem for the budding watch enthusiast is that this automatic offering from Rolex is by no means inexpensive (the most recent iteration of the steel GMT Master II is virtually unobtainable right now and sells for well over its $9,250 MSRP). If you’d still like a GMT watch and don’t mind a quartz movement, Mercer, an American microbrand, has the Wayfarer, a 40mm GMT watch available on Massdrop right now for just $150.
Available in navy, black or grey dials, the Wayfarer’s fourth GMT hand an inner 24-hour track allow you to track a second time zone, and 100m of water resistance and a textile strap means that you don’t have to worry about knocking it around while traveling. So while it may not have the cachet of the GMT Master, for $150, the Wayfarer is the perfect starter GMT.

A note on Massdrop:
Massdrop is not like other online retailers. It’s a members-only site that requires signing up (all it takes is an email address). If you’re not a member, you can sign up here. When you place an order from Massdrop at a discounted price, you’re not buying from them directly. The site works by taking orders from consumers, then bulk ordering product at a discount directly from brands and other wholesalers. For more information on how Massdrop works, click here.
