It actually is easy being green.

Bell & Ross’s signature rounded-square case has proven to be an exceptionally versatile foundation for experimental designs as diverse as the playful BR-03 Helipad and the avant-garde BR-X3 Micro-Rotor.

But the airplane cockpit-inspired case is at its most versatile and appealing in the BR-05 integrated sports watch collection. As great as the original three-hand and chronograph iterations are, the Genta homage really shines as a GMT.

Unfortunately, the GMT line is relatively neglected compared to its counterparts. It debuted with a black dial in 2022, followed by white and sky-blue variations released over the following two years, all relatively restrained for Bell & Ross.

After four years, the Parisian watchmaker has finally unlocked the full potential of the BR-05 GMT with the new “Green Steel” reference. It features a calming, muted green dial with a gleaming sunburst finish.

The color is uncommon and refreshing, yet modest and demure enough to wear every day with any attire.

Aside from the chromatic update, this is a standard-issue BR-05 GMT. It features a 41mm stainless steel round-square case with vertically brushed surfaces and polished chamfers. The fixed steel bezel is decorated with four exposed, functional screws, and there are two smaller screws securing the crown guards.

It is available on the brand’s H-link tapered steel bracelet or a rubber strap with a polished stainless steel deployment clasp that matches the green dial.

Green machine

The “Green Steel” dial is a perfect complement to the existing BR-05 GMT blueprint. The “baignoire-style” (which means bathtub in French) applied indices, date window frame and rounded 6-9-12 numerals are rhodium-plated.

The hour hand, minute hand and counterbalance on the seconds hand all match the indices, while the GMT hand stands out with a large arrow tip. All of the hands and indices, save for the seconds hand, are filled with green-emission Super-LumiNova.

The 24-hour GMT track is printed on the prominent rehaut, with the top half in white-on-green, and the bottom half in black-on-white. The date disc matches the dial as well, with the 31-day track printed in white.

Power wheel

The BR-05 GMT is a “caller”-style GMT watch, meaning the GMT hand is adjusted independently, which is preferable for tracking foreign time zones from a fixed location rather than for travel.

It is powered by a BR-CAL.325-1 automatic movement, which is a customized Sellita Caliber SW-330. Along with boosting the power reserve to 54 hours, Bell & Ross added a signature skeletonized wheel rotor, visible through a sapphire exhibition caseback.

Availability and pricing

Blue, black and white/silver are by far the most popular watch dial colors, but I’ve long had a soft spot for green. From a styling standpoint, it’s just as neutral and versatile while offering a refreshing alternative.

Whether you call it avocado, pistachio or “Green Steel,” this new BR-05 GMT perfectly exemplifies the appeal of a verdant dial.

The Bell & Ross BR-05 GMT “Steel Green” is available now from Bell & Ross for $5,300 on a rubber strap and $5,800 on a steel bracelet. It is not a limited edition and is only the fourth member of the regular-production BR-05 GMT lineup.
