Peak Design, the San Francisco-based photography gear company, built itself on a tiny accessory called Capture. In basic terms, Capture is a clip. In not-so-basic terms, it’s a versatile mounting system that allows photographers to carry their cameras in unique and practical ways. Peak Design has since evolved to make camera straps and bags, but Capture is still one of the brand’s core products (and Peak Design continually improves it with redesigns); right now it’s also on sale for 20 percent off.
The newest version of Capture — the third version — is smaller, lighter, stronger and easier to use than its predecessors. It was easy to use in the first place though: screw a small plate onto the bottom of any camera via its tripod mount, attach Capture to any belt or strap and then slide the camera into it. Capture automatically locks the camera into place; to release, all you have to do is press down on a small button and slide the camera out. It feels worryingly delicate on first use — as perching an expensive camera on a tiny piece of aluminum should — but stands up to serious shaking and won’t release accidentally.
Camera straps are great, but Capture creates a more secure and entirely hands-free method of carrying a camera. I have two of these, and they now live on the backpacks that I take hiking and ski touring. It ensures that my camera is always at-hand, freeing me pausing during a climb to rifle through my bag every time I see a shot. I happily recommend it to any adventurous photographers (especially when it’s discounted like this). The 20 percent off deal will be applied at checkout.
A note on Massdrop:
Massdrop is not like other online retailers. It’s a members-only site that requires signing up (all it takes is an email address). If you’re not a member, you can sign up here. When you place an order from Massdrop at a discounted price, you’re not buying from them directly. The site works by taking orders from consumers, then bulk ordering product at a discount directly from brands and other wholesalers. For more information on how Massdrop works, click here.
