Bicycles are a spectacular form of transportation — efficient, entertaining and health-improving all in equal measures. But there’s one small issue with them: unless you’re Captain America, you’ll never come close to sustaining the speed of an automobile while on a bicycle. If there are roads or trails you want to hit on your self-powered two-wheeled conveyance, you’ll need a bike rack to carry them on your four-wheeled gas- or electric-powered one.
Now, you could opt for a roof-mounted bike rack, but that comes with some issues; getting a bike on and off the roof of a car isn’t exactly an easy procedure, and all it takes is one forgetful moment with an overpass to shove your beloved bicycle off this mortal coil. Trunk-mounted racks work okay, but let’s face it, you’ll always be a little paranoid about whether those straps holding your bike down can really be trusted. No, for the last word in the bike racks, you want one that mounts to a towing hitch.
And wouldn’t you know it: right now, you can grab Thule’s EasyFold XT 2-Bike Hitch Rack for $156 off the usual price at REI.
The EasyFold XT can carry two bikes, each weighing up to 65 pounds; the wide design makes it easy to transport even heavy mountain bikes and e-bikes. Lockable torque limiter knobs on the arms let you know when the bike is secure, while the wheel straps boast adjustable pump buckles to help keep it locked down. A tilting action enables you to access the trunk or hatch with the bikes still on there…and, of course, it folds up easily.
