As we enter the last week in January, winter is in full swing. The roads are often wet and full of slush, which means that if you want to get out there and get your miles in, you’ll need the proper footwear. Runners depend on their sneakers to keep their feet dry and warm while they’re pounding the pavement. If you’re logging one, three or fifteen miles on winter roads, you’re going to need something that’s waterproof and breathable. Most trail running shoes offer a waterproof membrane to keep ice, snow and sleet from melting into the upper, and if you know what to look for, you can keep your toes from getting wrinkly. If you can find a pair built with Gore-Tex (GTX) you’re in the clear. We sourced some of our favorite trail running shoes below — all with Gore-Tex, so you’re ready to tackle winter head-on.
Speedcross 4 GTX by Salomon $160 $112
Ghost 11 by Brooks $150
All Out Crush 2 Gore-Tex by Merrell $130 $95
Cascadia 13 GTX by Brooks $160
