No other brand exemplifies the dad shoe quite like New Balance. And while that was once considered a negative in the fashion world, the scales have definitely shifted in the brand’s favor.

That upward trajectory is something the outfit has certainly leaned into. In fact, even as summer finally approaches, it has already prepared the perfect interpretation of one of its most iconic silhouettes.

The New Balance U9060Sv1 might just be this year’s best all-around warm-weather sneaker.

For the most part, the silhouette remains, but there are some notable changes that make this a much better summer shoe.

99X marks the spot

This NB 9060 can trace its origins back more than three decades, as it is a part of the brand’s beloved, long-lasting 99X series. For those not in the know, this line launched in the 1980s and is widely considered New Balance’s best and most comfortable sneakers of all time.

You can see many of the retro line’s signature elements in this sneaker, as well as bits borrowed from elsewhere in the brand’s catalog.

For instance, it has the signature leather paneling (though it’s not real leather; this shoe swaps in synthetic material, but the style remains) and mesh panels typical of 99X shoes. It also gets a classic N logo on the side, borrowed from the original 991 Race Jewel.

However, the very chunky outsole (which falls right in line with today’s Y2K-inspired trends) is taken from the classic 860 model.

It also has some noteworthy tweaks that make it a bit more warm-weather-friendly, even veering into outdoor-friendly style and streetwear.

Summer sneaker

While I’d still call this a sneaker, it’s definitely non-traditional in its format. In fact, you’d be right on point to call it a mule, as it has the back end chopped off and replaced with an adjustable strap.

Not only does that make it easier to wear, but it’s the primary element that makes this a more warm-weather-friendly shoe. That said, it’s hardly the only bit.

The mesh, for instance, while being a signature element of the 99X line, is a bit looser and more wide-knit, making it a hell of a lot more breathable than other shoes in the 99X catalog.

This shoe also swaps traditional laces for a more hiking-inspired cable system, complete with a lock. That means you never have to stop to tie your loose laces, as they’ll stay snug and in place (another element that makes these easy slip-on shoes).

It also features a dual-layer midsole with ABZORB and SBS cushioning, making it more than comfortable for all-day wear, whether you’re out on the town or rocking them at a backyard BBQ.

Availability and pricing

The New Balance U9060Sv1 is now available on the brand’s Japanese site in black or white for ¥19,800 (approximately $125). However, there’s always a chance it will launch in the US sometime soon.
