Timberland’s signature work boots are probably in the top three most iconic work boots of all time, alongside Doc Martens and Red Wings. And they have been for literal decades, dating back to their original release in the early 1970s.

For the most part, they’ve remained largely unchanged, but for some special editions, such as the PNW-coded Our Legacy Workshop collaboration or the basket-like Textured Premium 6-Inch Boot.

Now, that boot is getting yet another unique reinterpretation, this time at the hands of a legendary Japanese streetwear brand. Meet the Timberland x Beams Buckle Boot Gore-Tex.

The biggest difference between these boots and the standard version is that the lacing system has been swapped for a strap and buckle.

Undoubtedly, the first thing you’re going to notice about this boot is its closure. It is completely different from what is typically found on this iconic boot — namely, traditional laces.

In fact, these boots have no eyelets whatsoever. So, even if you wanted to swap in some laces, you couldn’t. Having said that, while this new buckle closure might seem novel for Timberland, it actually hearkens back to a different iconic boot style: engineer boots.

Originally designed for railroad engineers and firemen, these laceless boots gained renewed popularity in post-WWII America among motorcyclists, as they offer great protection and security, and the strap-and-buckle closure is less subject to breaking from friction and heat than typical laces.

That closure swap also really changes the overall vibe of these boots. They seem more minimalist and perhaps even of a different time — a throwback reimagining, you might say. And while that might scare off some traditionalists, it’s sure to be a hit among those who appreciate an avant-garde yet historically connected approach to footwear.

Despite the significant departure of the boot’s closure system, there’s still much of the original boot intact. For instance, it comes in Timberland’s signature Wheat colorway.

Furthermore, this boot is still crafted similarly to the brand’s more traditional boots. It features a Nubuck leather upper with quadruple-reinforced seams and the instantly recognizable padded collar, which provides both comfort and ankle support.

It also maintains the brand’s signature lugged rubber outsole, anti-fatigue removable footbed and 400 grams of PrimaLoft insulation.

And for those worrying about getting their boots dirty come questionable weather, fret not: like the brand’s other Premium boots, this pair has a Gore-Tex membrane that makes them waterproof and more resistant to mud, muck and whatever else.
