Smartwool has been the leader in performance wool socks for years, but the aesthetics of its offerings have been decidedly outdoor. Because traditional knitting requires that wool be pre-dyed, the ability to create intricate patterns has been limited. (Browns, tans, grays and greens are long-standing color themes.) Now, thanks to a new “print-on-wool process,” Smartwool can translate virtually any pattern onto wool after the knitting has already been completed. Its first release of printed socks, called the Curated Collection, corroborates the possibility for endless variety with patterns ranging from dark camouflage to abstract sand dunes.
