Certain types of products are so popular, people just can’t seem to keep from reinventing them — even when they are inherently simple.

A great example is the utility knife, a glorified razor blade sheath that gets new treatments all the time, with everyone from The James Brand and Knafs to countless crowdfunded projects taking a crack.

The latest to catch my eye borrows its design of one of the best, but does so at such a low price point, I can’t help but be intrigued.

From Kickstarter brand ActMax, the DeckShiv is super slim, endlessly fidget-friendly and starts at just $39.

Let it slide

There’s just no escaping a comparison to RiveryMFG’s Zero and Zero-G utility knives, which have been lighting up the EDC world for the past couple of years.

If I am ActMax, I would welcome such a reference — assuming a lawsuit doesn’t follow — as it’s easily one of our favorite ute knives.

The textured handle improves grip not only for blade deployment but for practical everyday usage as well.

The appeal here is similar: a pocket-sized rectangular “box” that looks unassuming until you slide one side up with your thumb, deploying the razor blade.

A slight downward pull, meanwhile, brings the blade swiftly and smoothly back into its casing, with an equally satisfying click.

You may only need to perform these actions a few times through the entire course of an afternoon, using the knife to tackle everyday cutting and slicing tasks.

But just like with a well-designed pocket knife — be it a crossbar lock, button lock or any other single-handed mechanism — you won’t be able to stop at once, twice or even 10 times.

Beyond the fidget

While the haptic addiction carries most of the water here, it’s worth noting that it wouldn’t be possible without a host of bona fides.

Key elements of the DeckShiv’s functionality include a magnetic slider, an auto-retracting mechanism and an internal carbon fiber sheet with a seamless sliding track, all to ensure consistent and long-lasting action.

Case options include (from left to right) tough titanium, well-balanced aluminum and lightweight, translucent PEI.

The textured, grippy outer casing measures a compact, pocket-friendly 2.64 inches x 1.14 inches by 0.47 inches, with the weight depending on which of three materials you choose.

The polyetherimide (PEI) option weighs just 1.35 ounces (while revealing the DeckShiv’s inner workings), the aluminum edition weighs 2.2 ounces and the titanium treatment tips the scales at 3.2 ounces.

Adding to this knife’s appeal is the fact that replacing razor blades is a literal snap — with an additional seated magnet ensuring the fresh steel stays firmly in place.

A removable pocket clip, keychain/lanyard hole and a tritium slot (to help you locate it in low light) round out what looks to be one helluva value play.
