The “winter blues,” a slump in mood and energy, is often categorized as a negative phenomenon, brought on by the lack of sunlight during the coldest months of the year … but a new collection from Arc’teryx sees the concept in an entirely different way.

If this is what feeling the winter blues means, then I am digging it.

An exclusive capsule collection developed in partnership with Beams Boy, Arc’teryx’s upcoming “Glacial Collection” celebrates the winter blues as a moment of peace and tranquility.

I’m feeling blue

For the uninitiated, Beams Boy is the ironic name of a Japanese womenswear brand spun off from Beams in 1998; it reinterprets men’s classics as minimal, utilitarian, style-forward apparel for women.

With that sort of script flipping built into the brand’s DNA, it is no surprise this new collection does the same for the winter blues.

The new five-item capsule collection is inspired by the mysterious blue of the seasonal ice caves deep within the Blackcomb Glacier, located in British Columbia, Canada, above Whistler.

The soft blue hue is meant to evoke the stillness, tranquility and clarity of those caves, and the items included in the collaboration are designed to thrive in such frigid environments.

These include the Thorium Jacket, the Beta SL Jacket, the Gamma Hoody, and two unisex accessories: the Bird Word Cap and Mantis 1 Waist Pack.

The Thorium Jacket is a hooded puffer that blends 750-fill-power responsible grey goose down with synthetic Coreloft in high moisture zones, all wrapped in a durable nylon shell with DWR coating.

The lightest shell in the Arc’teryx Beta line, the Beta SL Jacket provides waterproof, windproof and breathable protection while maintaining comfort and urban-friendly styling.

The lightweight Gamma softshell hoodie offers windproof protection and breathability, while the brushed lining offers cozy comfort. The slim silhouette is excellent for layering and transitional weather.

While all three jackets are women’s specific styles, the Bird Word Cap and Mantis 1 Waist Pack are not; the cap is breathable, moisture-wicking, stretchy and quick-drying, while the 100 percent recycled polyester Mantis 1 Waist Pack’s 1.5 liter storage capacity is ideal for just the essentials.

Each of the five items within the collaboration maintain their original, technical DNA while being wrapped in the new, limited-edition Glacial colorway.
