Taylor Swift is such a sensation for Swifties that literally every move she makes gets scrutinized and analyzed to death.

While I am undertaking a huge metaphorical leap here, one could say the same of Benchmade’s Bugout with regard to pocket knife enthusiasts.

A justifiable hit since its introduction in 2017, the reigning EDC champ makes news every time it gets a new blade or handle treatment, which Benchmade is savvy enough to do just often enough.

But even as Benchmade has introduced MagnaCut in a number of its other knives, the super-est super steel has by and large steered clear of the Bugout.

That all changes now, in an unexpected way, thanks to Benchmade’s online Customizer.

Have it your way

It’s not just a Burger King slogan anymore, as Benchmade recently updated the Customizer, adding some eye-popping new blade steel and handle options for the 535 (Bugout) as well as the 940 (Osbourne).

Among these is the aforementioned MagnaCut, which has dominated the premium knife space for the past few years thanks to its remarkable blend of edge retention, corrosion resistance and toughness.

Benchmade is not immune to its charms, as you can find this blade material in more than a dozen of the brand’s offerings, including fishing knives, Bugout-adjacent knives like the Bailout and TaggedOut and also the PSK and the Osbourne.

For whatever reason, there is no MagnaCut Bugout, but the Customizer lets you procure just such a knife with a few clicks, even adding artwork, text, a serrated edge and what appears to be black Cerakote finish if you so desire.

What’s really interesting here is that adding MagnaCut costs just $10, the same surcharge for S30V, which is less than you’d pay for S90V ($30) and much less than “Dama Ladder,” a very fancy Damascus steel treatment costing an additional $200.

It’s too early to believe the bloom is off the rose for MagnaCut, but what I can say is this is kind of a sweet deal because if you opt for a Grivory handle, you can walk away with an excellent MagnaCut-powered EDC knife for the relatively reasonable price of $220.

Hypnotic handles

Alongside the MagnaCut steel option are some handle treatments that are just as compelling, if not more so.

The Customizer now offers the choice of five different mesmerizingly patterned handles from Fatcarbon: Livewire, Snow Fire, Purple Haze, Frost and Jungle Wear.

You can even choose among 10 different thumb stud colors, including Violet, shown here on a black MagnaCut blade alongside a Fatcarbon “Livewire” handle.

Founded in 2019, Fatcarbon is a small Lithuanian-based company producing eye-popping carbon fiber treatments that are arguably as much of a sensation in the knife and EDC space as MagnaCut is.

We’ve seen some of these treatments in Benchmade knives before, most notably the Mini Barrage Purple Haze that dropped early this year.

This Fatcarbon variant is known as “Snow Fire,” which makes no sense and all the sense at the same time.

Even so, the Customizer provides a greater range of options and the opportunity to build a knife that has literally never existed before.

These handles do carry a significantly higher surcharge than MagnaCut does: $150 a pop, or about $1,400 less than the median price Swifties reportedly shell out for concert tix.

Availability and pricing

Benchmade Custom Bugouts start at $210. However, with a MagnaCut blade and a Fatcarbon handle, you’re looking at more like $370.
