A French designer’s fine flipper dispenses with the foppery in favor of streamlined looks and slick function.

Just as the definition of a “gentleman” is pretty wide ranging, so too is the meaning of “gentleman’s knife.”

Still, the finest examples of the latter in my experience are those that cause about as much fuss in your pocket as a premium pen

This Stéphane Espi-designed, Böker-produced Fructis is so sweet, it could just as easily be called the Fructose.

That level of fuss being “minimal,” which explains why I am drawn to a recent Böker release that’s reassuring in its simplicity.

Being stripped to its bare essentials, ironically, enables the Fructis to truly shine.

The frill is gone

Based in the South of France, Stéphane Espi is a self-taught custom knifemaker with nearly two decades of experience and multiple Paris Sicac knife show awards on his mantle.

Perhaps that’s why he can confidently design a knife that leans deeply into function, with its elegant form being a happy byproduct.

The business end is a 3.15-inch sheepsfoot blade made of Nitro-V, stonewashed to shimmer in the sun.

This budget-friendly tool steel delivers high edge retention, toughness, corrosion resistance and everyday task capability.

Deployed via a subtle front flipper, it rotates out swiftly and smoothly on a ball-bearing pivot, held in place by a secure and steady liner lock.

The handle is similarly utilitarian, textured G10 that plays nicely with the naked steel, while its nearly four inches of length provide a comfortable, hand-filling grip.

As streamlined as the rest of the knife, the pocket clip is nonetheless sturdy and reliable.

Rounding things out is a tip-up pocket clip and 2.65 total ounces that’ll weigh you down even less than that other gentleman’s staple: a high-quality wristwatch.
