Cross-pollination. It may have gotten its start in the plant world, but it’s alive and well in the EDC knife space these days.

CJRB Cutlery’s versatile and affordable new folder, the Glacier, is the latest example.

The micarta-handled Glacier offers a rare blend of gentlemanly looks and tactical hues.

Blending expertise from two different brands under the Artisan Cutlery umbrella, it boasts a range of EDC and culinary applications.

The fact that it’s also a great-looking, dare I say tactical, gentleman’s knife is just a bonus.

Multi-functional folder

The “two different brands” I am referencing above are CJRB, Artisan Cutlery’s more affordable sub-label, and Butterfork, their semi-secret kitchen cutlery spinoff.

By its folding nature, the knife leans more toward EDC, which is why you find this one with the CJRB label. Butterfork generally sticks to fine fixed blades of the Chef’s, Bread and Nakiri varieties.

The wood-handled variant would not look out of place on your desk and even in your dining room.

Bringing the two worlds together could have made for a jumbly mess, but the exact opposite happened: a smooth-operating folder that’s sleek enough to be right at home as a fine dining utensil.

That’s most true of the wood-handled edition of the Glacier, which is just a few serrations away from passing for a good-looking steak knife.

The differences between the two variants are largely aesthetic, but the textured Micarta scales offer better grip.

That being said, I feel a bit more drawn to the micarta-handled variant, which offers a bit more functionality thanks to its grippy texture.

The combination of a beefy black PVD-coated blade and near olive-drab scales transmogrifies the aesthetic from culinary to tactical.

Special ingredients

Of course, the price is nice enough that you could grab both versions for a little more than a Benjamin.

In either case, you get a 3.54-inch drop-point blade made of AC’s proprietary AR-RPM9, an affordable knife steel valued for its edge retention, ease of sharpening and durability.

While AR-RPM9 is by no means a super steel, it should prove plenty capable enough for most everyday tasks.

Deployment is swift thanks to the ambidextrous thumb studs and a somewhat rare feature for a knife at this price, a button lock.

That secondary deployment option makes the blade just as easy to retract with one hand, just a push and flick of the wrist — or simply holding the handle at such an angle that gravity does most of the work.

The integrated lanyard adds a touch of class and makes it easy to attach this knife to a pack if you like.

The glacier also boasts a stylish bolster, which, not unlike spats, adds an unmistakable gentlemanly nature to the proceedings.

Rounding things out are a steel clip and a lanyard integrated right into the butt of the knife, giving you a couple of ways to tote your Glacier to the dinner table or the field.

Availability and pricing

Both variants of the CJRB Glacier are available now for $55.
