Danner’s Functional New Release Includes a Valuable Feature Most Hiking Boots Neglect

While it is packed with innovative tech, the Arctic 600’s most functional detail might also be its most subtle.

It’s universally agreed upon that hiking boots should be weatherproof, durable and able to maintain traction and warmth.

But until now, making them easy to get on and off hasn’t always been a major point of focus; anyone who has wrestled with a burly pair of boots knows what I’m talking about.

Go ahead, get ’em wet.

Danner’s new Arctic 600 certainly meets the above standards, but it’s also more functional than many trail-ready options, thanks to a feature you might not expect to find on a technical hiking boot.

Zip it

In terms of a winter hiking boot, the Arctic 600 has everything you could ask for … and then some.

This cold weather-ready style boasts 200 grams of Primaloft Gold insulation to keep toes toasty, an ultra-cushy Vibram SPE midsole and removable Ortholite footbed paired to maintain tons of cushiony comfort and uppers crafted from rich, durable suede.

Meanwhile, Danner’s proprietary, 100 percent waterproof barrier allows moisture to escape, without letting any in.

Do not, I repeat, do not wear these boots inside. Your floors will thank you.

Continuing the long list of included innovation is the outsole, which combines Vibram Nisqually Arctic Grip and Vibram Arctic Grip AT compounds to deliver truly unparalleled traction in wet and icy conditions.

In fact, the outsole is so good at its job that these boots come with a warning to not wear them indoors; they may harm your floors.

(However, if you’re heading above the treeline, it’s important to remember that these outsoles, as rugged as they are, do not replace the use of crampons or spikes on the trail.)

That’s a lot of tech to take in … but I’m just getting to my favorite part of the boot, which is the integrated size zip.

Winter boots can be notoriously stiff, especially if they’re designed for the trail. Danner flips the script on stuffing your feet into rigid boots by including a dual closure system on the Arctic 600, with both traditional laces and an unexpected YKK side zipper.

While the addition of a side zipper isn’t anything new on lifestyle boots, it’s an uncommon, surprisingly welcome highlight on this winter-ready hiking boot.
