This Might Be the Best-Looking Affordable Kickstarter EDC Knife Yet

A little-known Japanese shop has blown way past its fundraising goal with a beautifully blacked-out blade.

You probably don’t need me to tell you there’s an awful lot of crap in the crowdfunding space.

If that weren’t the case, a podcast literally called Your Kickstarter Sucks probably wouldn’t be so popular.

Thankfully, as I’ve learned from years of sifting for unique knives, multi-tools and EDC items, there are plenty of diamonds in the rough as well.

The latest might be the best-looking sub-$100 Kickstarter knife yet: Edge Craft Japan’s curiously named Knight Fang, which has raised over 1,800 percent of its goal with 30 days to go.

Bark and bite

I say “curiously named” because Night Fang — implying a darkness-dwelling wolf or a vampire — seems like the more logical moniker. Adding K to the front conjures, what, a chainmail-suited Dracula?

Perhaps the small Tokyo-based workshop behind it, Edge Craft Japan, chose to double down on the wordplay due to the knife’s double-barreled sales pitch.

One barrel would be the aesthetics, which, trust me, are far superior to the vast majority of out-of-nowhere knives regularly popping up on Kickstarter and other crowdfunding platforms.

Measuring 8.6 inches from tip to tail, the Knight Fang is a marvelously minimalist blacked-out beast with only an orange-rimmed silver pivot screw providing a pop of color.

The other barrel is, of course, the function, which is pretty seamlessly aligned with the form.

Let’s start with the business end, a full-bellied, 3.62-inch drop-point blade made of D2 steel.

This tool steel is admittedly of the budget variety, but it is nonetheless prized for its wear resistance and edge retention.

In ECJ’s hands, the material gets even more compelling courtesy of titanium plating — which, like Cerakote, boosts corrosion resistance — and a bit of grippy jimping on the spine.

The ergonomic zinc alloy handle, meanwhile, echoes the blade’s darkly dazzling countenance while adding its own grip-improving texture.

Between the blade and handle sits the aforementioned pivot screw, which, together with a prominent rear flipper, ensures snappy single-handed deployment.

It’s not immediately clear from the Kickstarter campaign, but I checked with EJC itself and can confirm the locking mechanism is a classic liner lock, which means one-handed retraction of the blade is also possible with a bit of practice.

Rounding things out is an equally black reversible tip-up clip, ensuring this 3.4-ounce beauty sits securely in your pocket till you need it.
