Filson’s Flagship Wool Coat Gets Turned into a More Everyday-Friendly Work Jacket

Combining the DNA of some of the Seattle brand’s best outerwear pieces was a stroke of genius.

Filson has no shortage of iconic, time-tested silhouettes in its catalog, especially when it comes to outerwear. Yet, the Seattle-based outfitter continues to impress by offering new iterations of its most time-tested products.

The brand’s latest, the Filson Mackinaw Wool Work Jacket, combines elements from some of the brand’s best coats to create a fresh, everyday-friendly style piece perfect for cooler weather.

A century of pedigree

In case you’re unfamiliar, Filson’s flagship wool coat is the Mackinaw Wool Cruiser. Originally patented in 1914, this jacket has been a staple of the brand’s catalog and the larger outerwear industry for over a century.

This jacket is renowned for its styling, warmth, wealth of pockets and more (for reference, we reviewed it after some hands-on testing). However, it’s not perfect for everyone.

On its relatively short list of downsides, its length makes this a tough regular wear — it’s better suited for the coldest months when you’re spending a lot of time outside. However, this Work Jacket alternative takes the same rock-solid build and transforms the icon into a more everyday-friendly jacket, like the brand’s Short Cruiser Jacket.

Instead of a long, chore coat-style cut, this one fits more like a trucker jacket. Although it retains its construction and other details, the shorter cut makes this a much simpler, easy-wearing go-to coat.

Mackinaw wool is kind of like a cold-weather super fabric. And it’s this fabric that gives the jacket its best properties, much like its longer-length siblings.

Perhaps obviously, this fabric is extremely warm. It’s great for wear in the winter because of how warm it can keep you. But it’s more than that…

This wool is also an incredible insulator. In fact, it retains its warmth even when wet, meaning it can keep you cozy even if you get caught in a downpour.
