Over the past few years, Gerber has really shaken up the outdoor space with everything from experimental bushcraft options to premium pocket knives to innovative spork alternatives.

Even so, one thing I admire about the 87-year-old Portland, Oregon-based brand is that it consistently produces tough, reliable pocket knives at wallet-friendly prices.

The Vista’s slim profile and light weight make it easy to carry and use every day, which is kinda the whole point of EDC.

The latest example is the Vista, which offers just about everything you could want in an EDC knife that costs just $40.

Buena, Vista

Let’s start with the business end, a 3.24-inch drop-point blade made of 440A stainless steel.

While made of a pretty affordable steel, the blade is still quite qualified for most everyday tasks … and also whittling.

Not even close to a super steel, 440A nonetheless offers respectable strength, corrosion resistance and durability, making it ideal as a wallet-friendly outdoorsy option.

Textured handle scales and a smooth pivot lock make this knife easy to deploy, retract and, you know, use.

Which means that assuming your needs are mainly of the food slicing, twine cutting, package opening and whittling variety (as opposed to, say, bushcraft), it’s just a smart financial play.

The Vista also features a compelling mechanism in the form of a pivot lock, which, together with the generous thumb slot, enables smooth one-handed deployment and retraction of the blade.

The Vista has an open length of 7.7 inches, a generous 3.24 inches of which is its blade.

Available in Black, Sand and Baltic Haze colorways, the 4.46-inch ergonomic handle is made of GFN (glass-filled nylon) that is textured to improve grip.

The deep-carry clip ensures the Vista is literally right by your side whenever you need it.

One last point in the Vista’s favor? It’s easy to carry, thanks to a lanyard slot, tip-up pocket clip and relatively light weight of 3.05 ounces.

Availability and pricing

The Gerber Vista is available now in Black, Sand and Baltic Haze colorways for $40.
