As Leatherman enthusiasts know, the brand’s main site is not the only authorized place to score its world-renowned multi-tools, knives and other EDC essentials.

If you seek limited edition and/or hard-to-find releases, you will likely have much better luck in two other places.

Two Leatherman multi-tools side by side, one silver with pliers open labeled "MR. CRUNCH," the other black with a corkscrew and bottle opener extended.
Mr. Crunch and Europe75 are two of the rare multi-tools you currently have a shot to score while the Vault is open.

First, the Exchange is a brand-approved resale marketplace where you can snag deals on used, sometimes discontinued offerings.

Second, the Garage is essentially the brand’s test kitchen, where it occasionally drops unconventional releases.

It’s here that the brand released its first single-function, not-at-all-folding knife, for example. It’s also where some very exclusive drops are happening right now, with caveats, for a limited time.

It’s all your Vault

Leatherman has opened its legendary Vault and is thereby granting enthusiasts a chance to snag some incredibly rare, retired and archived offerings.

The first chapter of a planned annual event runs through April 2, during which time Leatherman will release discontinued delights each morning at 9 a.m. PST.

Some products will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, while others are part of a purchase lottery system. For the latter, you will need to submit an entry, with winners selected at random when the Vault closes this Friday.

While it is a bummer that most people won’t get these rare releases, there are a couple of upsides. First, you don’t have to pounce right when the lottery opens, and second, it’s preferable to an auction, where prices could swiftly skyrocket.

As for what sort of products are involved, the initial drop is pretty compelling. The first-come, first-served product is the aforementioned fixed blade knife, while the lottery products are unique Garage multi-tools. The clock is ticking on all of the items, really, as the lottery closes at midnight PST on April 3.

Peep and potentially pursue the four items in the first drop below, and check back for more rare releases coming soon.

Leatherman Malloy Special

The Garage’s Batch #007 release emerged from a collaboration with the surfing, ranching, film- and music-making Malloy brothers. The business end is a 2.7-inch drop-point blade made of MagnaCut, which boasts a superior blend of toughness, corrosion resistance, edge retention and ease of sharpening. The ergonomic handle is made of light and tough micarta in a striking off-white, while a lanyard hole and custom leather sheath make it easy to carry.

Leatherman Mr. Crunch

With a moniker inspired by its distinctive double-pliers, the modern Mr. Crunch honors founder Tim Leatherman’s original patented prototype from the 1970s, valiant unreleased effort that preceded even the breakthrough PST. This upgraded tribute, which was the inaugural Garage release (Batch #001), incorporates the pliers into the highly advanced FREE P4; thanks to the brand’s innovative GP100-worthy magnetic tech, all 21 tools can be accessed with one hand.

Leatherman Europe75

The Garage’s Batch #004 release is a delightful curveball inspired by the travels of Tim and his wife, Chau, had in Europe in the mid-1970s. Toting only the essentials, they of course leaned on a traditional pocket knife, hence this multi-tool’s classic, plier-free profile. It boasts 11 handy functions: a corkscrew with assist, a 420HC blade, spring-action scissors, an awl, bottle and can openers, three screw drivers, a ruler and a wire stripper.

Leatherman The Darkside

Inspired by Leatherman’s collaboration with renowned artist Tom Sachs, the Batch #002 Garage release is basically a souped-up Charge. Among the highlights are rare materials for the brand, including S30V stainless steel and layered G10, as well as the darkly dazzling DLC coating from which this multi-tool draws its name. The loaded suite of 21 functions includes some oddities as well, most notably a carbide scribe and a ball point pen.
