The duffle bag is a mainstay of modern outdoor exploration, but its roots can be traced all the way back to the 17th century. This means for over 300 years, people just like you have been digging through the cavernous main compartment of their favorite duffle bag, cursing under their breath for not making a better effort to keep things organized after day one of their trip.

While the contents within, the materials used and the features included in these hard-working haulers may have changed in the last three centuries, one thing remains the same: the duffle’s enduring usefulness and appeal.

Filson Scout All-Weather 50L Duffle

Built for serious travel, Filson’s challenger to adventure duffles, like Patagonia’s Black Hole line, is 50 liters and made from 300D ripstop fabric and a 600D Oxford bottom with a TPU coating for outstanding water resistance. A U-shaped storm-flap zipper opens to a spacious main compartment, while padded backpack straps and multiple grab handles give you both duffle and backpack carry modes.

Pros

  • Elevated aesthetic not often found in an outdoor duffle
  • Rugged and durable
  • Ideal size for multi-day excursions

Cons

  • Limited colorways
  • Pricey

Filson’s take on the adventure duffle checks all the performance boxes an outdoor enthusiast could hope for, and incorporates a healthy dose of the heritage-inspired aesthetic that has made the brand so desirable for the last 128 years.

Filson

While aesthetics had us reaching for this bag above competitors, it’s the functionality that had us coming back for more. Featuring the ability to function both as a traditional duffle as well as convert into a backpack, Filson added distinct details to improve the user experience.

An additional band was added to wrap up excess slack on the bag’s shoulder strap and the quick release buckle, and helped to prevent the strap from getting in the way or getting stuck, which came in clutch during travel days.

Filson

The waterproof lining, padded bottom and multiple grab handles stood out to our editors as they packed, stuffed and carried this duffle on multiple excursions.

The exterior zip pocket offered on-the-go access to items like passports, phones and headlamps, and the burly 300D recycled polyester ripstop TPU fabric felt durable enough to go the distance.

Adventurous travelers with an eye for design, take note.

Best Budget Duffle Bag

Tan-colored Gregory duffel bag with a textured pattern, featuring two sturdy handles with a padded grip. The bag has the Gregory logo prominently displayed in dark lettering on the front, along with a horizontal strap detail above it. The right side of the bag has a zippered compartment labeled "ALPACA 40.Gregory

Gregory Alpaca Duffle 40L

Specs

Dimensions 22.8 x 13.3 x 11.3 inches
Capacity 40 liters
Materials 100% 900D recycled ripstop polyester fabric

Pros

  • Spacious storage
  • Durable material
  • Functional details

Cons

  • Suitcase straps are cumbersome
  • No 50 liter option

This fully featured duffle defies the “budget-friendly” stereotype of sacrificing quality and functionality to save money. The Alpaca is streamlined, rugged and comes with plenty of thoughtful features.

Brown duffel bag with a large main compartment open, showing a blue mesh zippered pocket on the inside of the lid. The interior lining is dark with a subtle grid pattern. The bag has two brown handles, one with a padded grip, and black hardware. The brand name "GREGORY" is printed vertically on the side.
Water-resistant, TPU-coated, recycled ripstop polyester fabric keeps contents of the cavernous main compartment dry.
Gregory

So, what’s to love when it comes to the Alpaca? A lot.

Gregory used a high-quality 900D polyester ripstop (40 percent recycled) with TPU weather-resistant coating fabric in the main body of this duffle, which is on par with many of its pricier competitors.

Gregory also added in multiple pockets, ample storage and daisy chain attachment points on both sides of the bag.

Budget bags often skimp on quality to keep the price low, resulting in an uncomfortable carrying experience. This is not the case with the Alpaca; our editors were impressed with how cushioned the backpack straps felt, and noticed that the main body material held up against rough travel conditions.

There are some downsides; it would be nice if the suitcase handles could detach, for example. But overall, the Gregory keeps up with its competition, and saves you a ton of dough in the process.

Most Iconic Duffle Bag

Patagonia Black Hole Duffle 55L

Specs

Dimensions 22.8 x 13.3 x 9.5 inches
Capacity 55 liters
Materials Body: 14.1-oz 900-denier 100% postconsumer recycled polyester ripstop with a postindustrial recycled TPU-film laminate

Pros

  • Lots of colorways
  • Wide range of sizes
  • Sustainable construction

Cons

  • Too big to use as a carry-on
  • Can’t lock zippers for airline travel

Since its release 21 years ago, the Black Hole line has been widely regarded as one of the most iconic, recognizable and popular duffle bags in existence, and the 55-liter version is the stand-out midsize version among the pack, perfect for multi-day to week-long adventures.

A packed suitcase with neatly folded clothing and hiking boots. Visible items include a green and brown plaid Patagonia shirt, tan corduroy pants with a Patagonia leather patch, rust-colored textured fleece, mustard-colored pants, brown hiking boots, and a black Patagonia zippered pouch. The suitcase has a mesh zippered compartment on the inside of the lid.

Patagonia

The gigantic main compartment of the bag can hold days’ worth of climbing, hiking, camping and alpine gear, although it’s certainly not limited to these categories.

Our editors love checking this duffle for their flights, thanks to the weather- and abrasion-resistant, 100-percent recycled polyester ripstop body fabric that provides ease of mind against hard-hearted baggage handlers.

A person is holding a packed Patagonia 70L Black Hole Duffel bag in a brown storage sack with a zipper. The sack features a white outline illustration of the duffel bag and the text "70L Black Hole Duffel patagonia" on the front. The person is wearing olive green leggings and a light-colored long sleeve top.
When empty, the entire Black Hole Duffle can pack down into a zippered side pocket, making it clutch as an extra bag on trips.
Patagonia

The removable, ergonomic shoulder straps are a godsend when schlepping this bag around camp, and the padded base protects against hard knocks and hard rocks.

Our favorite way to pack this behemoth is with Patagonia’s Black Hole Cubes; the 55-liter option fits three, making the main compartment slightly less black hole-like.

There have been many copycats since the Black Hole first entered the scene, but if you’ve got a thing for heritage or are simply brand-loyal to Patagonia, this 55-liter workhorse is hard to beat.
