The duffle bag is a mainstay of modern outdoor exploration, but its roots can be traced all the way back to the 17th century. This means for over 300 years, people just like you have been digging through the cavernous main compartment of their favorite duffle bag, cursing under their breath for not making a better effort to keep things organized after day one of their trip. 

While the contents within, the materials used and the features included in these hard-working haulers may have changed in the last three centuries, one thing remains the same: the duffle’s enduring usefulness and appeal.

Built for serious travel, Filson’s challenger to adventure duffles, like Patagonia’s Black Hole line, is 50 liters and made from 300D ripstop fabric and a 600D Oxford bottom with a TPU coating for outstanding water resistance. While aesthetics had us reaching for this bag above competitors, it’s the functionality that had us coming back for more. Featuring the ability to function both as a traditional duffle as well as convert into a backpack, Filson added distinct details to improve the user experience.

An additional band was added to wrap up excess slack on the bag’s shoulder strap and the quick release buckle, and helped to prevent the strap from getting in the way or getting stuck, which came in clutch during travel days.

So, what’s to love when it comes to the Alpaca? A lot.

Gregory used a high-quality 900D polyester ripstop (40 percent recycled) with TPU weather-resistant coating fabric in the main body of this duffle, which is on par with many of its pricier competitors.

Gregory also added in multiple pockets, ample storage and daisy chain attachment points on both sides of the bag.

Budget bags often skimp on quality to keep the price low, resulting in an uncomfortable carrying experience. This is not the case with the Alpaca; our editors were impressed with how cushioned the backpack straps felt, and noticed that the main body material held up against rough travel conditions.

There are some downsides; it would be nice if the suitcase handles could detach, for example. But overall, the Gregory keeps up with its competition, and saves you a ton of dough in the process.

Our editors love checking this duffle for their flights, thanks to the weather- and abrasion-resistant, 100-percent recycled polyester ripstop body fabric that provides ease of mind against hard-hearted baggage handlers.

The removable, ergonomic shoulder straps are a godsend when schlepping this bag around camp, and the padded base protects against hard knocks and hard rocks.

Our favorite way to pack this behemoth is with Patagonia’s Black Hole Cubes; the 55-liter option fits three, making the main compartment slightly less black hole-like.

There have been many copycats since the Black Hole first entered the scene, but if you’ve got a thing for heritage or are simply brand-loyal to Patagonia, this 55-liter workhorse is hard to beat.
