Is This the New Technical Jacket to Beat This Fall and Winter?

Outdoor Research may have just dropped the mic with its release of the Vesper Insulated Hoodie.

Monday, September 22, 2025 is the official start of fall this year, and I couldn’t be happier to welcome back the crisp air, shorter days and falling temperatures of shoulder season.

It turns out, Outdoor Research can’t wait either. As part of its Fall 25 Collection release, the outdoor stalwart released a quietly technical layering piece that the brand is calling, “most versatile insulator in the OR collection.”

Seeing as how OR helps set the bar in terms of technical apparel, this is quite a claim. Can this workhorse jacket live up to its self-imposed hype?

See you next fall

The Outdoor Research Vesper Insulated Hoodie combines Outdoor Research’s functional reputation with a sleek, streamlined aesthetic, resulting in a “fall” jacket that can be worn year-round.

Designed to offer breathable warmth and weather-resistance, the Vesper is ideally suited for the variable conditions that define shoulder season, and thrives during alpine adventures and long hikes.

Lightweight, recycled fabrics are the defining factor in the Vesper. The synthetic VerticalX™ ECO SR insulation blends recycled polyester with a plant-based materials for increased warmth, stretch and breathability.

The complementary bluesign® approved, 20D ripstop nylon/spandex blend face fabric is wind- and weather-resistant, and is able to simultaneously maintain protection and breathability.

Zippered hand and chest pockets offer secure storage for essentials, and the entire jacket can pack down into its left-hand pocket, which doubles as a stuff sack.

Multiple cinch points lock in warmth: the insulated hood with a brim, elastic cuffs and adjustable drawcord hem all offer a layer of customization and functionality, which is ideal for the fluctuating temperatures so characteristic of fall.

A new quiver killer?

While Patagonia and Arc’teryx oftentimes take the mantle for style-forward designs that bridge form and function, the Vesper Insulated Hoodie will give its a competitors a run for their money this season, thanks to a pared-down aesthetic and unique colorways like Winterberry and Rainforest. At 12.1 ounces this isn’t an ultra-lightweight design, but it won’t weigh you down, should you need to toss it in your daypack.

Availability and pricing

At $255, OR’s new wear-everywhere jacket sits comfortably in the middle of its category’s price range. The Outdoor Research Vesper Insulated Hoodie is available now on the brand’s website.
