The Retro-X is often imitated but never replicated. Now, the outdoor brand has tweaked it once again to widen the gap with impostors.

Patagonia’s Retro-X is one of the brand’s most imitated garments, fleece or not. That makes sense, as it boasts a stellar combination of cozy comfort and throwback styling. It doesn’t hurt that it comes in a bunch of colorways, too, so users can easily find one that matches their style.

However, one of the reasons this fleece jacket is so beloved is that the brand keeps improving it. For instance, this year, Patagonia’s Classic Retro-X Fleece gets some minor tweaks to its winning formula that have a major impact, thus inching it closer and closer to perfection.

Same great looks, better cozy vibes

Thankfully, the overall styling of this beloved jacket (and all its permutations) remains unchanged. That vintage look is a big part of what makes this garment such a major hit, so it’s a major win — not that it was ever really at risk; the brand knows what it’s doing.

That means the changes are largely invisible to the naked eye. Regardless, the alterations significantly impact how the jacket is made and, more importantly, how it wears.

Now, the fleece is made from 100 percent Repreve recycled polyester, “certified by OceanCycle and sourced from coastal communities at risk of plastic pollution.” It’s also made in a Fair Trade Certified factory, giving it major points for sustainability and humanitarian practices.

That translates to a 0.25-inch-pile fabric that’s softer and comfier from the first wear. It’s also still windproof for all-climate comfort, while retaining its heritage looks. All around, this jacket is a winner.

Spoiled for choice

The changes cover the entire Patagonia Retro-X Fleece lineup, including the classic jacket, vest and even a hoodie. They also apply to men’s, women’s and children’s styles.

Of course, the fabric swap isn’t the only alteration, either. There have been a few other changes that make these fleeces even more cozy and versatile.

For instance, the fit is more relaxed overall. Plus, the inner liner has been revised to be more layering-friendly, giving it more all-season adaptability.

Furthermore, the pocket shape has been changed to harken back to the 2000s, and there’s a fuzzy lining on the inside of the collar. It’s hard to say where Patagonia can take the Retro-X line from here, but there’s little doubt the brand will keep finding ways to improve it.
