A couple of years ago, I had the distinct privilege of getting my hands on Spyderco’s Para 3 pocket knife. A spiritual successor to the legendary ParaMilitary 2, this knife pared its predecessor’s iconic looks and a measure of its formidability into a much more everyday carry-friendly format.

Two years later, two versions of the Para 3 (the Para 3 Lighweight being the other) are still a regular part of my EDC loadout rotation. In fact, I probably carry the Para 3 as much as any other knife in my admittedly extensive collection.

I love this knife so much that I’m always keeping an eye out for new configurations to pick up. The latest to draw my attention is this exclusive, eye-catching Spyderco Para 3 CPM Cru-Wear Toxic Storm FatCarbon.

Toxic avenger

While everyone’s favorite part of a given knife is typically the pointy end (can you blame them?), this particular folder flips the script. It’s not that the blade isn’t exciting (it is); it’s just that the handle scales are easily the most jaw-dropping part of this Para 3.

That’s because, instead of its typical scales — which are made from G-10 — this one sees them swapped for FatCarbon. And not just any FatCarbon scales; these ones have a unique Toxic Storm colorway.

Of course, those scales aren’t just for looks, either. Along with the unique pattern, the composite carbon fiber material offers an exceptional combination of strength, stability, durability and lightness.

This isn’t the first time Spyderco has employed FatCarbon for a knife’s handle scales — most recently, the Chaparral got the FatCarbon treatment — but it is nice to see it on what is arguably the brand’s best all-around EDC knife. And I hope this means there’s more to come.

Those handle scales are the newest bit to be found on this version of the Para 3. That said, the rest of the knife is no slouch, and there are some differences to be found from the previous edition I reviewed.

Notably, the blade is different from the standard edition. The regular version of the Para 3 utilizes S45VN steel, whereas this one has CruWear. While S45VN is a bit more corrosion-resistant, CruWear gets the edge (pun intended) when it comes to toughness and edge stability.

This knife is quite slender, and it’s also extremely lightweight for its size.

However, this blade also has a DLC coating, which provides additional corrosion protection and enhances durability and wear resistance. It maintains its size (2.93 inches), Round Hole deployment and iconic leaf shape.

On the other side of the knife, this Para 3 also retains the brand’s legendary Compression Lock, a reversible pocket clip and its 4.29-inch handle length. That brings the whole package up to 7.2 inches, for those keeping count.

This is one of the most striking editions of perhaps the brand’s all-around best folder.
