Way back in 1992, The North Face launched a silhouette that would go on to become perhaps its most iconic, timeless design. To this day, the Nuptse jacket remains among the brand’s most popular offerings for outdoor enthusiasts and streetwear fans alike.

Now, the brand has launched what might be the most unique edition yet. Called The North Face Japan x Sashiko Gals Nuptse Hanten Jacket, this take combines ancient Japanese craft with forward-thinking materials into a single masterful, breathtaking offering.

Nippon tradition

It’s essential to note that this jacket is part of a larger collection, created in collaboration with Sashiko Gals, an artisan collective from Ōtsuchi, Iwate Prefecture, Japan. While the jacket is the clear highlight in the collection, it stands alongside several other pieces of gear with the same stylistic elements, including puffer boots and t-shirts.

But what’s more significant than the items themselves is the artisanship involved in creating each of these pieces. All of them, for instance, feature painstakingly hand-sewn sashiko thread designs, making each piece unique — even bearing the “scars” in the fabric left by the person who sewed them.

Furthermore, even the style of the jacket has been changed and reinterpreted through a Japanese lens. Instead of a typical zippered closure, this Nuptse has its zipper removed entirely, making way instead for a padded hem and a tie in the front — elements taken from traditional hanten winter coats.

Even without knowing the high level of care and craft put into this jacket, it’s still a thing of beauty, masterfully combining the winter warmth of an iconic puffer with iconic Japanese styling.

Ancient meets modern

Interestingly, the traditional artistry of this jacket is bookended by modern, high-tech developments, specifically in the fabrics and fibers.

The exterior of the jacket, for instance, is crafted from Spiber Brewed Protein fibers — “a material produced through precision fermentation using plant-based ingredients and can be processed into various forms.” Whilst remaining durable and reliable, this fabric is far more sustainable than others typically used in the same fashion.

The insulation within the jacket is also forward-thinking, comprising 700-fill recycled down. The interior nylon lining also consists of post-consumer material.

What’s especially interesting about this is that, while the ancient craft and modern tech might, at a first glance, seem disparate from one another, they work magnificently in harmony and, in fact, share sustainability at their core (as the handcrafted, cotton detailing and construction keep this jacket out of typical mass-production factory lines).
