Hometown hero

The Best Made Wool-Lined Waxed Field Jacket is bursting with pedigree, but you wouldn’t know it from the look of its thoughtfully restrained aesthetic.

Cut and sewn in New York City, the latest release from the New York-based boutique outdoor brand is built upon its popular Cruiser pattern, but this new jacket sees some updates to construction that allow for a greater range of motion.

Along with the more accommodating pattern redesign, the incorporation of high-end materials makes this cozy field jacket irresistible.

An exercise in restraint

First, the shell is British Millerain waxed cotton, a fabric with over 100 years of proven weather resistance. The lining is full-bodied Wyoming wool, woven by American Woolen Company in Stafford Springs, Connecticut. The hand pockets are lined with the same material.

Durable Wyoming wool on the jacket’s lining isn’t supposed to be soft and delicate like cashmere: this is working wool.
Best Made

Best Made calls this “working wool” due to the fact that unlike ultra-soft, comparatively weak wool, Wyoming wool is bred for resilience, warmth, and longevity; its fibers are naturally resistant to pilling, so the lining maintains its integrity for the long haul.

That inner integrity is important when you’re considering investing hundreds of dollars in a jacket that is intended to last for decades. Lots of folks focus on the longevity of their shell fabrics, but as your mom probably told you, it’s what’s on the inside that counts.

While Wyoming wool will keep your hands and torso warm, Best Made opted to line the sleeves with military-grade cotton herringbone, for ease of movement and to prevent your layers from bunching up.

Finally, the cuffs and collar are finished with corduroy, which adds a distinguished and textured element to this refined field jacket, while one large interior pocket and oversized game pockets at the back integrate additional utility.
