Filson Turned Its Most Affordable Field Coat into a Full-on Levi’s Challenger

By dropping its Canvas Outfitter pattern into a tougher 11-ounce denim shell, Filson just turned a value-minded field jacket into a legit everyday jean jacket contender.

Filson’s most approachable field coat just got the full denim treatment — and suddenly it looks a lot like a more premium challenger to Levi’s long-standing dominance in the American-made jean jacket game.

Filson has taken the pattern from its Canvas Outfitter Jacket — a straightforward, wrist-length barn coat with combination hand and cargo pockets and a corduroy-lined collar — and rebuilt it in 11-ounce denim.

The result is the new 11-oz. Denim Outfitter Jacket, which, while cut differently from the traditional trucker, still offers much of the same style appeal with arguably more usful features.

Denim meets field coat DNA

The unlined construction and midweight denim weave make this Filson jacket easier to wear right off the rack than the brand’s more burly, historic options.

Unlike Filson’s heavier, lined denim cruisers, which lean into stiff 14.5-ounce fabrics and cold-weather duty, this jacket is unlined and cut from a tighter, midweight weave that’s meant to break in rather than beat you up.

It pairs the familiar shorthand of a light-indigo jean jacket with honest workwear details — metal shank buttons, chore-style pocketing, and that signature corduroy collar — making it feel equally at home over a flannel, a hoodie, or just a T-shirt.

Unlike a lot of denim truckers, this coat’s five-pocket layout can actually hold quite a bit of EDC, or at least keep your hands warm.

The field-coat-derived pocket layout, which includes hand-warmer pockets layered over lower cargo pockets, also gives it real carrying capacity rather than just two chest pockets and vibes.

Availability and pricing

Pricing thankfully still sits closer to the original Canvas Outfitter, but the denim upgrade still comes with a $50 premium.

If the original Canvas Outfitter was Filson’s stealth value play, the Denim Outfitter is its attempt to plant a flag in everyday denim outerwear.

Pricing thankfully still sits closer to the original Canvas Outfitter, which wound up beingFilson’s most affordable true jacket last year, than to the brand’s premium wool or lined denim pieces. But the upgrade to denim does still come with a $50 premium.

The 11-oz. The Denim Outfitter Jacket in Light Indigo is available now from Filson and other retailers.
