Over the past few years, Flint and Tinder has built the most impressive assortment of waxed canvas outerwear from any American brand.

Now, Huckberry’s in-house label is gaining ground on the British brands that dominate the genre — Barbour and Belstaff — by expanding into warmer climates.

Flint and Tinder’s flagship product, outerwear and otherwise, is the Waxed Trucker Jacket. Introduced in 2016, it gained respect for its affordability and quality, then went viral in 2023 after an appearance on the hit HBO series The Last of Us.

It has been released in a wide range of colors and has remained Huckberry’s best-selling product for the better part of a decade. But this massively successful jacket is not without faults and limitations.

Initially released in unlined and blanket-lined options, the unlined version was unanimously found to be uncomfortable because the waxed canvas was too rough. Even though the flannel lining made the jacket a resounding success, it limits wear to colder and temperate climates and seasons.

Flint and Tinder has finally remedied this dilemma with a new version called the Dry Wax Trucker Jacket, which swaps out the stout Martexin 7 oz. sailcloth for the softer and more pliable British Millerain Ranger 6 dry-wax cloth.

While the names are confusingly similar, the new design is thankfully just as close to the original. The Dry Wax Trucker Jacket is essentially a Flannel-Lined Waxed Trucker Jacket without a lining, and the updated fabric is the key ingredient.

Soften up

British Millerain is one of the most respected producers of waxed canvas because it was one of the mills, alongside Barbour, that pioneered the process of impregnating cotton canvas with paraffin wax in the 1880s.

The English mill is still at the forefront of waxed cotton innovation. The Ranger 6 fabric used in the Dry Wax Trucker Jacket is part of the TekWax collection, providing the desired weather-resistant properties for pure cotton while remaining soft and comfortable.

The coarse, ridged feel of the original unlined Waxed Trucker Jacket is replaced by a soft jersey texture with a slightly slick smoothness. It will even develop the patina coveted by wax canvas fans over time.

All of the familiar features are untouched, including the signed donut rivet buttons, welted hand pockets, adjustable waist tabs and single button-flap chest pocket.

Even though the new Millerain fabric is only one ounce lighter by the yard, its soft feel, enhanced breathability and, most importantly, its lack of a flannel lining make for an ideal all-purpose jacket for warm seasons and climates. It even works as a casual shirt-jacket over a t-shirt.

Availability and price

The Flint and Tinder Dry Wax Tucker Jacket is available now from Huckberry for $198, which is an even $100 cheaper than the flannel-lined version. It debuts in navy blue, dark olive and fatigue green.

One detail worth mentioning is that, unlike the Flannel-Lined Waxed Trucker Jacket that is cut and sewn in California from fabric milled in New Jersey, this new variation is made in Vietnam from a British textile.
