James Bond is back on screens this week.

No, we still don’t know who will be the seventh actor to portray 007 on the big screen, but we do have a new Bond thanks to the AAA video game 007: First Light, which debuted yesterday to rave reviews on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC (a Nintendo Switch 2 version will arrive later this summer).

First Light is the first James Bond console game in 14 years, and the first with an original story since 2010’s James Bond 007: Blood Stone. The new game is quite a departure for the franchise, as it features a younger 26-year-old Bond, voiced by newcomer Patrick Gibson, as he goes on a mission to earn his double-oh status.

But even in video game form, Bond remains the king of product placement. Real-life Aston Martins play a role in missions, Omega recently released a new watch featured in the game and now Orlebar Brown has dropped a collection of clothes worn by young 007 in First Light.

License to chill

This isn’t the first time the British resort wear brand and the Bond franchise have collaborated. Their partnership was born when Daniel Craig sported a pair of OB Setter swim shorts in 2012’s Skyfall. Craig followed this up with a long-sleeved linen shirt from the brand in 2015’s Spectre, and a pair of OB-T t-shirts in the actor’s swan song, No Time to Die.

More extensively, Orlebar Brown has launched several officially licensed 007 Heritage capsule collections since 2019. In this extremely popular series, the brand reinterprets clothing items worn by Bond and other characters from the entire catalog of 007 films, dating back to 1962’s Dr. No. OB has even made versions of the notorious terrycloth romper worn by Sean Connery in Goldfinger.

This new collection is a departure, however, as it marks the first time OB has designed pieces for a Bond video game. There are just three pieces in the collection (so far), which can be seen on Bond in the game.

Apparently, 26-year-old Bond had a bold sense of style, as this paisley-print linen shirt proves.

The first is a version of the brand’s Maitan camp-collar linen shirt in an exclusive paisley print. It’s available in two colors, dark blue “Night Iris” and the far bolder orange-and-green “Vermillion.” This shirt curiously does not feature 007 branding and was actually launched earlier this year, but the paisley pattern does appear on Bond in the game.

Next is another take on the Maitan, this time in 100-percent cotton terry towelling, a favorite fabric of the brand that traces its 007 roots back to that aforementioned romper. The short-sleeve shirt has a relaxed fit and is in “Light Pink Sand,” with five imitation mother-of-pearl buttons up the front. It features 007 branding on the tag, as well as on a discreet small tag near one of the side hems.

Of course the collection includes a terrycloth shirt, a favorite choice of Orlebar Brown with roots in Bond’s 1960s style.

Lastly, we have a pair of swim shorts, Orlebar Brown’s flagship product category. They’re in the brand’s Setter silhouette, which has the second shortest inseam of OB’s four swim short styles at 4.5 inches. The shorts are white with a navy ribbon down the side featuring smaller red and white stripes. The ribbon detail is inspired by a similar-looking tie worn by Bond in 1973’s Live and Let Die, which was chosen to highlight 007’s naval origins explored in First Light.

Like other OB swim shorts, their design is inspired by tailored pants for a more elevated look. They feature a nickel-effect zipper with concealed snap closure, a nickel-effect zippered back pocket and side-tab adjusters with nickel-effect fasteners. The fasteners are engraved with the 007 and Orlebar Brown logos, and there’s additional 007 branding on the tag. The shorts are made from 100 percent recycled polyester.

The press release for the collection mentions “other O.B-inspired polos, t-shirts and sweats throughout First Light to dress Bond not only for leisure, but for the quieter interludes between missions.” I asked an OB rep about these other pieces, but she was unable to confirm if any more clothes from the game would join the collection at a later date.

Availability and pricing

James Bond is known for his expensive tastes, and that extends to his clothing: Orlebar Brown is a luxury brand and is priced like one. The Setter shorts are priced at $395, the Maitan Towelling shirt is $445 and the Maitan Linen printed shirt tops out the collection at $525.

The pieces in OB’s 007 First Light collection launched on May 27 to coincide with the global release of the game. All are available now on Orlebar Brown’s website.
