Pelican Just Evolved and Elevated Arguably Its Best All-Around Travel Duffel

Last year, Pelican launched a sweeping collection of reimagined travel bags called the TRVL Collection, which won the brand some coveted awards and garnered a lot of attention. Within that collection, the Aegis sub-line offered the freshest twist, combining the best elements of hard- and soft-sided luggage together into a cohesive, versatile whole.

Now, the brand is already reinterpreting that line with the Pelican 22-Inch 4-Wheel Aegis Hybrid Duffel. This bag revamps the brand’s best rugged travel duffel, making it even more convenient and user-friendly, without losing any of the spectacular elements that made it a stand-out to begin with.

360 degrees of maneuverability

The majority of the elements that made the original Aegis Travel Duffel so superb remain intact in this new version. However, there is one major exterior swap that really alters the user experience.

The original bag had a pair of unidirectional wheels at the bottom of the backside, allowing for easier hauling through airports, train stations and wherever else. However, this new version adds two and changes their orientation entirely.

Instead of unidirectional rollerblade-style wheels, this one gets a quartet of omnidirectional wheels. This means they can swivel a full 360 degrees, allowing the bag to stand up on its end and be pushed forward, backward, side to side and even in circles. Better still, these are fan-favorite Hinomoto wheels, adding to the credence of their reliability, smooth operation and more.

There’s also a secondary benefit to this new configuration: the hard polycarbonate back now wraps around the bottom of the bag, providing even more protection and durability. The first edition of the bag was already tough, but this one is even tougher.

Airport powerhouse

Beyond the novel additions, there’s a ton of other elements to love about this carry-on rolling duffel. Like its predecessor, it boasts a water-resistant 500D Cordura exterior fabric alongside its polycarbonate back. It also has armored padding on the front of the bag, adding another level of protection to everything inside it.

Speaking of inside, the bag can hold up to 39 liters of gear. That is split between a generous main compartment, accessed via a clamshell opening, and numerous other compartments inside and out. The bag is also compatible with Pelican’s ModPak modular system for additional organizational options.

The bag is also expandable and has handy compression straps for when you need to lock it down tight. And the telescoping handle retracts into the polycarbonate back, making it flush and flat for easier storage and transport (it’s also less likely to break or get dented).

Other handy features include an external ID window, a sneaky security pocket for EDC gear and sensitive items (like tickets or your passport), internal mesh pockets and compression straps and more. Oh yeah, and it has a five-year warranty, in case anything should fail (which it shouldn’t).

Availability and pricing

The Pelican 22-Inch 4-Wheel Aegis Hybrid Duffel is now available on the brand’s site for $400. But if you need something bigger, the 30-inch checked version launches on March 27.
