The HomePod (and Siri) Can Now Control My Favorite Smart Plug

The Wemo Mini Smart Plug is the first device to gain HomeKit support via a software update.

If you’re building out a smart home and you want to control all your devices with Siri, say you have a HomePod smart speaker or you just want to speak to your iPhone, you’ve had several options thus far when it comes to smart plugs. Elgato and iDevices have probably the two best-known makers are smart plugs that support HomeKit, but you can expect more to come in the near future.

Apple announced last year that it would let third-party manufacturers roll out HomeKit support to their devices via a software update, instead of having to release a totally new product. Now we’re seeing the fruits of that decision, with the Wemo being the first to do so. If you have a Wemo Mini Smart Plug ($35) and you download the latest firmware update the smart plug will add HomeKit support — no need to buy any extra hardware.

If you have Wemo Mini Smart Plug already, you’ll now be able to integrate it into scenes and rooms with other HomeKit-supported devices. And if you’d don’t own one, it’s a really great smart plug to consider if you have an iPhone or HomePod and you’re looking to build out your smart home.

The firmware update is available to download now in the Wemo App.
