Yamaha has been a leading brand in home theater systems and stereo receivers for the past 40 years. Today, its Aventage range of AVRs is its most elite, designed for home theater enthusiasts who want to build a high-end surround system.

Last May, in a surprise move, the Japanese hi-fi manufacturer announced that it was rolling out a firmware update to entire Aventage range that makes each “Works with Sonos” certified. Basically, it makes it easier to sync your Yamaha home theater system with your existing Sonos system.

And right now, the most affordable AVR in Yamaha’s Aventage range, the RX-A2A, is on sale.

Yamaha’s elite, entry-level AVR

Yamaha’s Aventage range consists of four different AV receivers: RX-A2A ($1,100)RX-A4A ($1,400)RX-A6A ($2,700) and RX-A8A ($3,300).

Each is compatible with the latest TVs (up to 8K), supports the latest immersive sound technologies (including Dolby Atmos and DTS:X), and features high-resolution Wi-Fi streaming.

The Yamaha RX-A2A is the most affordable AVR in the range. Despite that, it’s still designed for pretty serious home theater systems.

It’s a 7.2-channel amplifier — meaning it can support seven loudspeakers (three front, two side surrounds and two rear satellites) and two subwoofers — and output 100 watts per channel.

Works with Sonos

The “Works with Sonos” certification means you’ll be able to use the Sonos app to automatically power on the receiver, select a designated input and control the volume. You’ll also be able to group it with your other Sonos speakers so that you can play TV audio across your entire home.

That said, there is a catch — you’ll still need Sonos’s wireless streamer, the Port ($449), to get the Yamaha RX-A2A working with your existing Sonos system. So it’s not exactly a cheap or “plug-and-play ready” right out of the box.

Right now, the Yamaha RX-A2A is currently $200 off. Normally $1,100, it’s selling for $900 from multiple online retailers. It’s the only AV receiver in the Aventage range that is currently on sale.

For those in the market for a deal on Sonos speakers, the company is currently having its first big sale of the year — it runs through February 16th or “while supplies last.”
