Could 2017 be the year of the affordable mechanical GMT? It is if you go turn to small brands, anyway. First, Ball launched its Roadmaster GMT with a staggering $1,300 discount; then Farer unveiled its first mechanical GMT for only $1,450. And now Archimede, a German-based microbrand known for its classically styled pilot’s watches, has launched a new mechanical GMT close to the $1,000 mark.
As far as GMT watches go, this one is pretty straightforward. The dial design is based on the iconic “Flieger” dial design scheme, and the case is a moderate 42mm in diameter (but a fairly slim 9.5mm thick). The movement inside is a Swiss-made ETA 2893-2, a workhorse automatic movement with a GMT function and a 42-hour power reserve.
The watch is available on either a leather strap, a steel link bracelet or a steel mesh bracelet, with prices starting at only $1,024. Given that the next most affordable mechanical GMT watches are at least a few hundred dollars more, Archimede is offering an incredible amount of watch for the money.
