This Affordable German Pilot Watch Is a Stylish Take on a Classic

The new Verus Grau watch from historic German brand Stowa offers a fresh take on the classic military watch in a collab with Worn & Wound.

Just like the military watches it made for the German Air Force in World War II, new Stowa watches are legible, rugged and plain — many don’t even carry a logo on the dial. Just check out the Stowa Verus Grau, sold exclusively through the watch enthusiast website Worn & Wound. But let’s not mix plain with boring. The Verus Grau has a gray dial that makes it feel distinctly playful and modern, while Stowa’s characteristically affordable price tag, $780, furthers the watch’s appeal.

The brand’s Verus is one of its most popular models, representing a refined take on the classic pilot watch known as a Type A Flieger. The gray dial is a step in a unique direction for Stowa, which is better known for its use of white-on-black dials, but no less functional.

Powered by an ETA 2824-2 automatic movement with a 38-hour power reserve, the Stowa Verus Grau measures 40mm wide in bead-blasted steel but clocks in reasonably thin at 10.2mm. It comes with two straps — black leather and a NATO — and it’s limited to just 100 pieces.
