In a world of frequent flyers and international business, it’s no wonder that world timers and GMTs are one of the most popular segments in watches. IWC’s Timezoner, which easily gives the user a read on multiple time zones, was thus an instant hit when it was introduced. It uses a convenient system to easily change the time zone via the bezel, and it’s got a technical, tool-watch look that’s easy to like. Now, IWC has released a new version with a “sepia-brown” dial and ceramic bezel to mark 80 years since Antoine de Saint Exupéry flew across the Atlantic Ocean in 1939.
The Timezoner uses a neat system in which turning the bezel in either direction will also move the hour hand accordingly — simple to use but mechanically pretty complicated on the inside. The watch also features a flyback chronograph with hours and minutes in a combined subdial at 12 o’clock, all powered by an in-house IWC 89760 automatic movement with a 68-hour power reserve. In steel and 46mm wide, the choice of brown gives it a subtle vintage vibe and is said to refer to the color of pilot suits from the era of de Saint Exupéry’s flight.
Antoine de Saint Exupéry was a French aviator, author of the children’s book The Little Prince, and a recurring inspiration for IWC. The Swiss watch brand works with the Antoine de Saint Exupéry Youth Foundation charity, and the proceeds from the first of 80 pieces in this limited edition will go to the foundation to support its educational initiatives. The IWC Pilot’s Watch Timezoner Chronograph Edition “80 Years Flight to New York,” as it’s formally called, will have a price of $13,100 each and is available now.
