Autrodromo, the boutique watch brand with its finger on the high-tempo pulse of vintage auto racing fans, debuts its second collaboration with Mobil 1 this year.

While the previous dial sporting the motor oil brand’s iconic red Pegasus logo took inspiration from 1950s racing watches, the newest collaboration jumps ahead to the 1980s. It pays homage to the golden age of rally car design with a sleek retro-futuristic look.

The Autodromo x Mobil 1 Group B Pegasus Edition applies a blacked-out DLC coating to the Group B Series 2 faux-integrated sports watch introduced in 2018. The look is complete with a high-contrast matte black dial marked with brilliant white detailing, framed by a metallic snailed rehaut.

Of course, the centerpiece of the dial is the mythic winged horse, originating in ancient Greek mythology and now inexorably linked to auto racing, stamped at 6:00. The signature bright red of the logo is complemented by a red-tipped minute hand and the numerals of the seconds track.

While Autodromo designed the Group B as an homage to a short-lived, notoriously treacherous 1980s rally racing league of the same name, the color scheme of this limited-edition model clearly has another inspiration.

The matte black dial and case, featuring white detailing and a touch of red accents, is an apparent nod to Porsche Design watches. It blends the blacked-out look of the Chronograph 1 with the three-hand dial of the Ocean 2000.

Turn on the bright lights

As eye-catching as the Group B Pegasus Edition is in broad daylight, it literally shines in the dark. The hands, tracks and Pegasus logo are coated with a generous helping of lume.

The distinctive handset — with a large, speedometer-style minute hand, a thin, stubby seconds hand and a skeletonized hour hand — glows a neon bluish-green that is matched by the minutes track. The Pegasus logo and the chapter ring markers both glow red.

Autodromo does not disclose if the lume used is Super-LumiNova, but I would be surprised if it weren’t. The dial is capped by a domed sapphire crystal, held in place by a brushed titanium bezel that resembles a caseback ring but is actually part of the core structure.

Black metal

Underneath the jet black PVD shell, the Group B Pegasus Edition case consists of a titanium core, exposed at the bezel, encased in a steel mid-case, and capped with a steel caseback, secured by six exposed screws.

The 39mm case is remarkably streamlined, measuring just 9.9mm in height. Angled lugs hug the wrist, and the razor-sharp silhouette continues throughout the faux-integrated bracelet (this has traditional lugs, despite the look) with flat links and a butterfly deployant clasp.

This homage to auto racing history, both competitive and horological, is executed with a refreshing degree of creativity and stands as Autodromo’s masterpiece.

Availability and price

As it turns out, the combination of sleek 1980s design, a comfortably sized case and a surprisingly affordable price of $995 was too much for retro auto racing fans to pass up. All available stock of the 70-piece limited-edition Autodromo x Mobil 1 Group B Pegasus Edition sold out in under 24 hours.

However, for anyone eager to get their hands on one, there is a glimmer of hope. The Mobil 1 DR1VRS CLUB is offering a chance to win one by simply signing up to join the club. While it’s far from guaranteed, at least it’s free!
